Do they have data scientists at the DMV??
People who live in the DMV recognize the acronym, which is all that matters for OP’s post
Capital One for FSI. Amazon’s H2, Facebook has been recruiting here heavy, and I think Google has as well. If you’re into pharma/biotech, they’re basically all here. All the major hotels too, but they underpay and are obviously not in a good place
Financial Services Industry
Chief
Capital One is hiring pretty heavily for DS, comp there is pretty good to quite good depending on the level. Fannie Mae has some data science roles and pays well, too, though there is some fragility in that organization right now. Amazon and Microsoft both have data science roles, though I don't know much about them at either org.
Besides Amazon and Microsoft, Capital One is probably your highest comp opportunity.
Capital one is good. But you're not going to land FAANG salaries. If you have niche skills and the right clearance, govt contracting is a good option
C1: would you know what long term growth there would be as a fully cleared data scientist in a TS environment? I understand you could easily make >$150k if you’re fully cleared. But what’s the next step? Do leads, managers, senior manager in those teams get paid that much more than their counter parts in industry or a non-TS environment?
Evil think tank. Evil pays better.
In my experience you have to hop companies every 2-3 years. Move anytime less than 2-3 years and you’ll be labeled a flight risk
Edit: also you have to go out and shop for offers sometimes so you can do a salary adjustment
Best to wait til after the virus situation. Meanwhile, make yourself indispensable, create a strong network with leaders in your company. When you get an offer or two, let the leaders you have a close relationship with know that you are torn and want to stay. Similar to looking for other jobs, you’ll only want to pursue a salary adjustment every 2-3 years. I’ve gotten $20k more over 1-2 years using the approach in my prior comment and this approach.
Is there a type of ML modeling that pays more?
For example, fraud detection in a financial company vs predictive modeling for government contractors.
NLP/NLG/text analysis is a safe bet, very mature and lots of work to be found. Computer vision is gaining lots of demand right now
Try iqvia, pays better than capital one
