Hey freelancers...I usually raise my rates every 2-3 years. For those of you long-time freelancers, how often do you raise rates? And by what percentage? Looking to keep up with market/cost-of-living and yet, not price myself out.

Depends on what the market will bear. You just need to feel it out.

I raised my rate $10/hour with every new client until I got consistent pushback. That helped me find my limit. Turns out people will pay way more than I thought.

like

The increases are not so much a percentage but what’s the next round number that makes sense. Would be weird to ask for 115/hr rather than 125/hr for example.

like

I’m a lot more fluid with my rates. It all depends on if I book a Sr AD role or an ACD one but then each one has a good $15 in flexibility depending on the type of work, length of contract, etc.

like

2-3 years sounds about right. Also agree with “feeling the market”. It’s a combination of both usually. If you feel like you’re getting gigs left and right and lots of recruiters calling then that’s a great time to increase your rate. Over the course of 12 years I went from 650-750-800-900-1000 dayrate. Often I’ll even get more than 1000 when doing hourly.

like

Yes...thank you. Same here. Everything is always negotiable. Was more wondering about raising rates...at some point we all do it...just curious how often and how much?

Yep, I do that too. Keep thinking I’ll max out but they keep saying ok!

I have been gunning for a promotion for over a year, and more so in the past 6 months since we’ve had other folks promoted. I’ve heard “Let’s make that happen” and “I’ll look into it” from managers, as well as repeatedly praised for my hard work. But when I follow up about a promotion... crickets. Meanwhile, I am getting recruiter inmail every week, often for senior roles. I love my team, but I’m getting so frustrated about my lack of growth. Advice?

Would you ever ask for a raise in a lockstep firm? I have billed enough hours over target consistently since the start of my career (500-800 hours over every year) that I am well over a year’s worth of target hours ahead. In a tough situation and need some advice. I’m an audit associate who got passed up for senior promotion this year, but senioring a busy season engagement. There is another senior that is supposed to be on the job, but he hasn’t been staffed on the engagement the past couple weeks and is off this week. I now have the full responsibility of this engagement on my hands and feel like it’s pretty unfair considering I got passed up for promotion and am not getting paid to be a senior. What do I do?

Just wanted to remind my fellow creatives that agencies need us more than we need them. It’s important to be respectful, but don’t be afraid to speak up, push back, ask for a raise, ask for time off or quit. The value we bring to the table is fundamental, very hard to replace and is often overlooked by us and leadership. Agencies everywhere are in overdrive mode and creatives are being overworked to keep the engine moving. Make sure you’re compensated properly for it.

Say you work at Accenture and are doing OK (haven't been laid off yet and have projects lined up). Also let's say that you have good skills in cloud infrastructure, which is plenty busy right now. What would motivate you to accept a job offer at a tiny consulting firm (less than 300 people)? Would a good raise and a promotion to Senior Manager be enough? There are many risks involved with going to a tiny firm. What would it take for you make the jump and overcome concerns?
