How’s Austin TX? Considering moving there vs Seattle, WA. I know they’re two completely diff places but I would like to know pros and cons. I was born and raised in NYC and single. Open to other recs

It depends on what you are looking for on a city but here are some thoughts on each:

Seattle:

Great natural beauty surrounding the city with mountains, lakes, Puget Sound - if you are outdoorsy, this area is for you (hiking, skiing, boating, camping, etc)

Weather is temperate so not too extreme in any season, summers are amazing and not too hot, winters aren’t too bad, does rain a lot

Very liberal city in a liberal state

Homelessness is a huge issue and the city doesn’t seem to be able to deal with it effectively

Crime (car break ins, home break ins) can be pretty bad even in nicer neighborhoods

Lots of younger tech people here which makes for a fun funky vibe

Can be hard to make friends and get settled (google the “Seattle Freeze” - it is real)

Cost of living is better than NYC but still high

Austin:

Fun city, smaller feel than Seattle

Liberal city in a conservative state (so if you are liberal, get used to feeling frustrated by statewide politics and if you are conservative get used to feeling frustrated by city politics)

Cost of living is better than Seattle and NYC

Southern hospitality and friendliness will make getting integrated easier

Funky town with fun vibe - also a college town with UT Austin there so a lot of young people

Not very pretty from a landscape perspective (in my opinion)

Hot as hell in summer which lasts forever

Smaller Big 4 offices so curious about career path long term

- signed someone who has lived in NYC, Dallas and now Seattle

SM1: so have I. I also have friends all over the world and I assure you that there are places where it’s hard to make friends as well, yet we don’t call them “Stockholm Freeze” or “Minneapolis Freeze.” I just feel like a lot of people call it a freeze so they can justify how they feel with an external factor, but it’s not true.

Seattle people are some of the nicest, friendliest people in the country. I agree we’re not open, but that’s just because we’re respectful of other people’s privacy. A lot of us also went to middle school, high school, and college together so it’s hard to break into friend groups, but that’s not unique to Seattle.

With that said, I spent most of my childhood here, so I kind of know how Seattleites work. That might be why it’s easy for me to make new friends who grew up around the city (vs. people who came here for jobs).

The Midwest is a great place if you’re open to other areas. Cheap housing. Good food. Extremely friendly people. Far more culture than we get credit for

I've lived in SF, Seattle, Boise, Indianapolis, LA, NYC, Dallas & San Diego. For weather I pick SD but COL in CA is ridiculous. I'd gladly move back to either Indianapolis or Boise. I'm a die-hard liberal but had no issue living in "red States", always made friends and hell, I get sick of talking about politics - more fun just to hang out, have a beer and enjoy the company.

Indianapolis is a really cool city. Nashville and Columbus, too

COL wise, after a lifetime in NY, you’ll feel like you won the lottery in Austin. While prices here are rising, it’s nothing like the northeast.

Austin is a Portland rip off at best... as for the crime comment - personally I can’t say I experienced that in the ‘nicer’ neighborhoods that I lived in... or in Seattle itself. It has been awhile and I have heard that the homelessness is really growing in the city itself so I can’t speak to that except to say there are plenty of places around Seattle as well. Seattle freeze is real, but can be overcome- I’m an introvert and I did it. Expensive yes, but I believe Austin is as well

Traffic is terrible in Austin. The city grew north/south, and is trying to expand westward, but there are no decent highways to get you into town. All the Big 4 offices are small, so promotion opportunities are limited. I’ve lived here almost 10 years, and it just doesn’t feel like home. If you live out west and can handle the traffic, you can find some nice views. Cost of living is much higher than other Texas cities, but salary isn’t adjusted any higher

I’d disagree. Cost of living in Austin isn’t any higher than Dallas or Houston

If you’re a heterosexual guy, dating is really hard in Seattle. I’ve heard that from basically all my close male friends and the fact that I have so many amazing single guy friends who want a relationship. If you’re a hetero lady, welcome to Seattle! Not sure about how easy LGBT dating scene is here but none of my gay friends seem to have big negatives regarding the dating scene so I think it should also be pretty good.

Nashville is great especially if you’re considering Austin you should look into Nashville

I’ve lived in Austin for a year now and have been on vacation in Seattle for a week. In Seattle I spent my time in downtown and Capitol Hill, and it seems to be a very walkable city with a lot of beautiful trails just 30-45 min outside the city. Food is way better and prices are fairly similar to Austin. Austin is super hipster, the city itself is pretty small but crowded with people, and affordable housing is more north where outdoor activities aren’t great. Also it’s ridiculously hot (it hits the 100s) but I will say people are friendly, as opposed to what I’ve experienced in Seattle. The dating scene is also pretty decent with most people in late 20s-mid 30s

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.
