You’re not alone.. feels brutal out there. Even with a solid background and referrals, getting traction is tough. I’ve seen a lot of "open" roles that seem like they’re just collecting applicants. Have you had any luck with startups or smaller brands? Curious if those are moving faster than big names right now.
I’ve had some luck with decent brands and startups but I get the sense that there’s a LOT of competition. Which puts the pressure on to perform in these interviews
Here’s my take:
- Meta and the most desirable tech firms get dibs on the overqualified folks who are out of work (for whatever reason).
- Pinterest wants ads-specific PMMs (B2B).
- There aren’t that many B2C companies who have a Product Marketing function, so the job market in general is super thin (ie. job market is shit). If you have experience in the field, no problem. If you’re adjacent and trying to get in, sorry, but it’s a tough sell.
Fair take. I see SO many B2B PMM jobs posted. I have a mix of B2B & consumer PMM experience, but most recently consumer so that’s the path of least resistance. There’s just a lot less opportunity out there though.
And going up against pure B2B PMMs puts me at a disadvantage.
Curious about this too since most of the signals I'm getting are just from much smaller startups
And the smaller startups just don’t pay like the big names do. I’m not interested in equity from startups - that’s just paper money
