You’re 52, going to be age discriminated in hiring markets and County is not federal government.
Anyone saying “not in this environment” without more questions is operating off emotion. I think you need to weigh how in-demand your skills are in the hiring market, how stable your company is, and what you wanna do personal (ya county probably would be more chill)
Pray about it first.
The attitude that government work is easier and workers don’t need to work as hard is why we need DOGE.
There’s an uncertainty in government positions currently. Even though it’s a county position… current admin is cutting budgets left and right, states and local will eventually feel the squeeze.
Not to mention the 60% forecasted chance of recession yesterday. Stay for now and keep your seniority at the current company.
No 25k is a lot
is he getting a pay raise at his current job?
Not in today’s environment.
I too am 52. You've got to ask yourself, "can I afford the lower pay?" I took a position two years ago from VP Finance to Accounting Manager. It was about a $15k pay cut. But, for me, it was the best move I've ever made...40 hour work week, and no stress. There are times that I do miss the extra pay, and wonder if I should pursue a higher position. But, in the grand scheme of things, I am right where I belong.
I took a lower position thinking like so but the controller ^ CFO are such incompetent pple that they pushed job to me to do . and using nasty abusive verbal jungle law & tone of voice to abuse others to do the job. I ended up working extra 2 hrs daily ( no lunch time no break time so far_. Job is easy for me .
(Speaking as someone trying to switch from gov to private sector )
Gov have great WLB because most are capped at 40 hours a week. This is a county job so it depends on the city.
Yes, the gov work will be less demanding and higher job security. However, gov workers deal with so much hate from people. You get the bare minimum to do your job, directly affected by politics, underpaid, raises rare, excessive rules/protocol that slows down doing the job, and a percentage (usually 5%)your pay gets put into pension that may or may not be underfunded.
You’re being paid on the low end for your controller job and will be taking an additional $25k cut on top of that. Its truly up to you. I would only recommend gov work if you needed the work experience itself or don’t care about making a ton of money.
are you F(^& kidding me...the pay in govt jobs are bigger than most out there ; job description could be terrified but the process is slow and flags so you feel it's nothing if you can kiss ass some govt pple managers . not my thing. they have to kiss my boot s
Personally I would not do it the big advantage of the government job other then WLB is the pension, given your age you are not going to maximize the pension so I would not take the government job at a lower salary.
those govt pple need to be over turned like fed govt employees recently. they should get rid of all those govt pple old and young; start again with new efficient process and pple. use AI if must. govt pple are just that useless compared to rest out there _hard earned. this is so true > I even knew it only by interviewing with those in management. I can tell how little they can do or know being in govt that long your brain is probably senile
Will a government job be safe with Trump?
ya not federal
25k in this day no
I work in government. The retirement and benefits are great. If it’s a unionized organization, you’ll likely run into some lazy or underperforming subordinates and it’s a lot easier for them to get management fired than it is for management to get rid of dead weight.
I can guarantee government work is not easier. Pay is lower in the non-profit sector and regulations/compliance work high. It's great for Accounting professionals who care more about mission than high wages. I am speaking to non-profit organizations receiving federal funds not literal government jobs though.
n0on profit is easier to get in but govt jobs are hard. why/. because like I said earlier, those management only hire pple they can push around to do the jobs for them , not telling them to change anything. static minds.
Wow! That’s too low! You are special! You are educated. That’s what I make as an accounts payable clerk. I’m putting my 4 year this year so I can move to another company. Maybe ask how frequently you can receive a raise? Wishing you best of luck.
I've done this. I actually took a 65 percent paycut. I had actually been downsized from my previous job. While it is nice to have 45 days off a year, government work is slow! I am shocked at the low skill level of my co-workers. Most have been in the job over 30 years and their skills are not up to par. The systems are antiquated, the motivation is low. Unless you are looking to retire and cruise into retirement, i highly advise you not to do this unless you are done with the rat race.
hey look at County of LA & city of LA how incompetent their financial auditor or controllers are. such things like fire tank empty m loss of homeless money etc etc and many more ( pointing fingers) you see how bad they are . its proven. say no more. however no one can get rid of them and everything something like this went wrong they either " coverup by ..." or going a " restructure" to save their jobs first. restructure costs money ( who cares it's govt money other pple money ) . its' lamed , sad . and true.
Work as sr accountant at community college. Pace I’m sure is slower but we have been grappling w county not willing to give us much of a bump in funding. So a lot now is baby boomers 60’ers retiring and they don’t/ can’t hire back so work load is higher than 20 years ago.
How is your cost structure is your mortgage small and manageable? Or are you struggling with inflation? If you’re divorced or trying to pay for kids expensive college you may want to stay in private.
Try to research how is their budget? Growing or shrinking? That May be the most important trend to know.
This is under fire but retirees from our union still get free health benefits say if you leave before 65.
You should know your self by this point. What makes more logical sense FOR YOU not anyone else. I enjoy knowing my work helps kids get a good education without putting them near bankruptcy. Our team is great and cohesive. I value that more than staying till 10 pm so I can go on a Lonely vacation. Or buy an expensive car with excessive repair costs.
I don't know the salary figures involved or your financial situation at home. If you have other income sources, like investments, and a nice retirement fund set up, then it would make since to start your end-of-career coasting with the county job. Understand that politics is even more volatile than the economy, so take that into consideration. When I was younger I took a position with a public school district. Five years, a superintendent and five new board members later, I was unemployed and had to use up all of my retirement fund to survive before I found another position. If you can weather a $20-25K reduction in income with a good chance of staying on staff for the next 10-15 years, less stress is better -- especially at our age (58).
That's exactly what I am considering. County/Government job doesn't come easy and to start at mid to high level without climbing the rank is even harder to see. That's why I am willing to take pay cut(of course I can afford it as well). But, I also worry about the current politics that this job might not be stable in the future.
absolutely no should be making the most you can between 50 and 65 that's when the push is on keep looking.
Also, depending on how big the city/county is where you live; from experience it is very clicky. My director didn’t care about the person only if the work was being done. So take that into consideration .if you really like the people you work with; that alone might not make it worth it.
I would not! They are also the first to lay off newlines during cut backs!
thats stupid unfair take of govt Hr . they should get rid of layoff those who've been there so long first. they're enough. they're already rich enough. let the new ones experience that thing...but most did the opposite. I had this HR person from county of ventu here in LA , just kept sending the same old lamed email ) probably generated from AI) didn't even know that their managment pple dont even want to interview to hire someone else ( probably to replace them )
