I am 58 years old and have 30 plus years of experience in the industry. I have been without work for 6 months and have been desperately searching for work in the Birmingham, AL area. I am beginning to wonder if experience is worth anything anymore or I am being discriminated against because of my age. I am an honest, reliable, hard worker and have at least 10/12 good years left to offer a company willing to give me a chance.

Age discrimination isn't as big of a problem in our field as it, say, in construction or other blue-collar industries. However, it does exist. While younger applicants are less likely to stay with the company for 10 years than you are, many managers fall victim to faulty math. "If it takes $5,000 to train this guy and get him up to speed, we get a better return on our investment with a 25-year-old than we do with a 55-year-old." Then there's the problem that someone with 30 years of experience should be making more than someone whose diploma's ink hasn't dried. "Do we pay the old guy $A when we get the newbie for $X?" If you just want a job, any job, without regard to pay, you could make a good argument that they get more for their $X with you than they do with the young guy. It isn't fair, but I'm afraid it's reality.

I'm right there with you. In the industry 37 years, 3 years in Compliance and getting nothing. I feel the same with discrimination, age, salary, etc. Very discouraging! I'm actually looking into getting my realtors license and changing direction completely. Best of luck to you!

We got rid of DEI for a reason…

What reason?

I can’t imagine trying to find a finance job in Birmingham. Branch out. Try Charlotte, Raleigh, and Jacksonville at least.

It sounds like you have some really great experience. I would suggest looking on Indeed and Linked in to see what roles you can find on there to apply for. The job market is really rough right now so hang in there.

You're a bit young for it but again is real!
I say keep trying and work with a headhunter if possible

I'm 63, 30 years experience I was let go in a workforce reduction
and I'm giving up after 10 months of shocked faces on zoom calls and blatant ageism
Managed to pull my 401k out of the market before the orange turd tanked it so I'm retiring early and taking a part time job doing something I enjoy!

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

First time Dad and my 15 month old keeps running up the stairs at my in-laws place and they keep encouraging it. Stairs are almost 10 inches high with nothing underneath and I’m worried that he might slip and fall in between the stairs. My FIL is a bit of a know-it-all and keeps insisting it’s safe and I don’t agree. What do I do? Don’t want to fight the entire house full of people about this and kid enjoys it too much and cries a lot if I/we prevent him from climbing

Extremely Disappointed with hikes!

I'm in finance/tech FPA, looking to go back to the defense industry for a 25% increase in TC. But wanted to see if I should leverage the new salary with current company to see if they'll match.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Current TC 103K [88/15], offer 125k base [+discretionary bonus].

Is there such things as FP&A positions in Big 4? If so, are there better times to make the change than others (I.e. at senior vs manager)? I’m currently in FP&A and looking to work at a Big 4, or another company that offers the ability to move abroad. My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.

Anyone in Corp Dev M&A? Received verbal offer today and it was a total boner killer that sounds non negotiable. Offer came thru random guy in HR vs hiring mgr/director and seriously considering going around hr cause the guy sounded lazy asf.@

Would like to understand market comp for in office CD roles, 4+yrs m&a experience and 25-40 advisories under belt. It’s an F500. Basically a pay cut of like 60-75% lol, idk if they’re testing me or serious. Edit: Happy to give any additional details.
