There’s about 100 legitimate candidates per opening these days, so they don’t need to accommodate.

Employers would disagree and think there’s value in having everyone under the same roof.
To their limited credit, our current remote/hybrid structures leave a lot to be desired. But, over the next few years we can expect to see these perks come back with a redesign that mitigates many of their current shortcomings.
I was actually contacted by a recruiter to sit in an office in my current city and was told I'd be working for 3 partners. After the call I looked at the firm and they only have 3 partners in my field and they all work in NJ, but want someone for my local office.

Owners frequently do things we might think are dumb or illogical. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.
TLDR, if you don’t want to be subject to someone else’s dumb rules, be your own boss.
Then you’re only subject to your own dumb rules.
