I’m also disabled, as i have cerebral palsy. I have worked hard my whole life to overcome it, I do all runs and filings for the firm. I’m slow because of my disability and getting to the courthouse downtown usually takes me 1-2 hours to drive there, park, walk, file, and drive back. They yell at me all the time for my speed. I’ve been out of law school 3 years. Have no mentor, and am miserable
Based on this additional information, I’d speak to an employment discrimination attorney. Lawyers should not be doing a runner’s job period, and the fact that they’re intentionally assigning that work to you AND berating you because your disability makes it more difficult disgusts me.
I would leave ASAP, speak to an employment law attorney and just to remote doc review until something better comes up. https://www.theposselist.com/how-to-subscribe-to-our-job-lists/
Also look for remote jobs on lawclerk.legal.
I’m sorry you’re facing this. Have you tried to waive in? Is there reciprocity or would you be required to sit for the bar? You shouldn’t stay where you’re not appreciated, but I’m on the outside looking in with my own job search.
It sounds like op hasn’t practiced where he is barred. I would be wary as someone who waived into 2 states when I relocated cross country every waiver application required practice where you are actually barred so I wouldn’t think you will be able to waive in not practicing where barred. Might as well take the bar where you’re living and open up more options
Get barred in the state you live in. Otherwise you’re just support staff, and will be treated like the WORST type of support staff (those who think they’re licensed to practice law).
I meant no denigration to OP, merely that the worst types of support staff are those that think they’re the ones able to practice law, and they start drifting out of their lane. This isn’t to be elitist; has a paralegal taught me something I didn’t know? You betcha. If they think there’s an error they can respectfully raise the matter, but at the end of the day it’s the attorney’s call (and their license on the line).
A foreign-JX attorney working as support staff is often a headache. While they’re not in an attorney role, they may drift out of their lane. There might be tension from other support staff who are more senior but not as over-credentialed.
TLDR: get licensed in your JX or go in house
What state are you in and where are you barred?
Be humble and thankful you have income. I'm a certified legal assistant and I've had one interview in 4 months. I've been ghosted by so many recruiters and hiring managers. I don't know what else to do. I get the almighty "Thank you for applying for the position, but you application was not accepted and we are moving forward with other qualified candidates " I've been employed with 3 law firms for a total of 7 years. Artificial intelligence sucks!.
Thank you for the advice.
If you need help locating a suitable position elsewhere. I own a firm that places attorneys nationwide.
