I am an art director. Was offered a freelance position at an agency and am in rate negotiations. Originally I quoted a w2 rate which is lower, but then found out the position was 1099. So I responded saying that since it was 1099, I would need to up by about 20% (for self employment taxes). Since then, I haven’t heard back. It’s been a day and a half. Have I been ghosted? Or could they just be running the numbers? I nervous I blew it.

I think it’s gone, unfortunately.

And not to add insult to injury, but I think you got it backwards. You’ll generally lose more in taxes with a w2 gig.

Yeah of course, hope it helps. A good accountant will save you so, so much money if you can convince agencies to agree to 1099 (which it seems you can!).

day and a half isn't crazy just follow up next week

Get an MBA and you can ask for equity instead

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .
