I've been at GT for about 8 years and another smaller firm for about 2 before that. GT's benefits are comparable to what I've seen elsewhere. The leadership team seems to try and make things better for the employees and cares. Brad Preber really exemplified this and we'll see how Seth does as CEO.
For WLB, keep in mind it is public accounting. With that in mind, my busy seasons tend to be short duration but very high peaks during those 3 to 4 weeks that I'm busy. Most people I work with average 50-55 charge hours during busy season. We get appreciation days every year at Christmas, more holidays than my non PA friends get and they recently started half day Fridays in the summer.
The culture will really depend on your office. I've worked with offices all over the country and most people realize that we aren't saving lives here and that there is more to life than your job.
Overall, I'm happy. I threatened to quit about a year or two ago because it got pretty bad for me. The one thing that has stuck with me is that a few partners reached out and asked what would need to change to make me stay. They worked on changing those things (less hours, different staff assigned to my clients, etc.). It's been a year two since then and those changes are still around. That has stuck with me because it wasn't just empty promises but actual change and I saw that they really cared.
Thank you so much for such a detailed response.
I left PwC after making senior and went to GT and stayed for 2.5 years. I really liked the firm, a lot more than PwC. I felt like all the partners were very nice and listened to me. I felt like I saw myself growing there, but I left shortly after making manager. While I enjoyed the firm and felt respected by senior management, I had to leave because I felt constantly used by a senior manager I worked with. I voiced my concern, but senior management was a bit apprehensive to make any changes to my situation because the senior manager was pregnant at the time and strongly voiced her opinion that she didn’t want me off her engagements because of her being pregnant. I can’t blame them since she she threw the pregnant card. But I would not have left GT if that situation would not have happened. Aside from that senior manager, I had a positive experience with everyone else at the firm.
