I would say it’d be quite difficult but not impossible. Tax and accounting are quite different
Agreed. The experience is a little different. Controllers usually oversee month-end close and the financial accounting team. Sometimes it also includes the tax department but that’s just a small percentage of their responsibilities
I made a jump from big4 tax to industry. The works is totally different and it will be a learning curve. I do have supports from my team and the organization so it wasn’t too bad. My goal is also to become a controller, and base on my experience working with many controllers, the jobs is quite intense. You still have a chance as assistant controller if your controller and the mgmt like you.
Thanks for all the input. From everyone is saying I might have a chance!
Depends on the size of the company and what they’re looking for
Well it depends on your experience and likability. Truth be told I got the role despite the final 2 people having more experience/the type of experience my company was looking for. You could either fall into it by being personable and having some experience or being just the right fit. I have 6 years of experience but I had audit/financial reporting experience. It really depends on the industry and the shop you’re interviewing for
Yeah this is good insight.. it's not ALWAYS about experience. Sometimes it legitimately is about the connection and confidence you bring to an interview. If they like you more than the other candidates, they could take a chance on you. Best to get referrals for any controller roles though because they might not even give you an interview if you haven't been in a similar role before.
