Not alone at all! Also, to anyone wanting a change, everything you’ve done up to this point isn’t a waste. Skills and experience always help, even if doing a different job. Healthcare admin or informatics might be a good change, but something you can still leverage what you’ve already accomplished.
I agree. After 20+ years, you don’t start over — you pivot with experience. Administration, informatics, consulting, and even education roles can be strong transitions.
I have felt this way since the minute I stepped into nursing school. I finally found a job where I excelled and got laid off. Then when I thought I would never fit in, i found the best job I ever had. It didnt last however since we were notified in oct of our clinic closing the end of this month. Now after 20 plus years I am starting over again…wondering if its worth it. Sorry I couldnt help just wanted you to know you arent alone.
I am sorry to hear this, thank you for sharing!! I just feel so lost. Put in all this effort and work with nursing school and now I just feel stuck. Now I’m out here applying for jobs I’m not even qualified for just because I want to leave nursing so badly.
I feel this. I left bedside last year for a non-clinical role and it seriously saved my sanity. Your skills transfer more than you'd think. Critical thinking, handling stress, interpersonal skills to communicate with patients/coworkers/leadership. Is there anything in particular that appeals to you? Or is "not what I'm doing now" good enough?
I would like to do something away from patient care. Something with data or analytics sounds appealing to me. But a lot of these need a degree in IT or something similar. I’m trying to look for health care jobs that have to do with my interests. That way my background as a nurse might help even though I don’t have the degree.
I enjoyed care management and also quality improvement programs such as PCMH. It’s still medical but is further away from the continuous stress and anxiety
You're definitely not alone. I've been wanting a way out for a while now, and in the process of opening my own business for handmade jewelry. I was about to take a marketing job to pay the bills until the business kicks off, but I just got offered a 3yr commitment in the state I have been trying to move to, and need the nurse's salary (and sign on bonus) to get established in a new state. Maybe some day.... But health admin or even marketing could work. We're used to dealing with people, and have more customer service experience than I think many of us realize.
You can go into informatics. I would use your time as a bedside nurse to get involved with EHR projects and this will boost your resume. I’m in informatics now and I love it. No patient care, only interact with nurses to make their documentation better.
