Wowww. That’s surprising that you want a custom cover letter for an $18/hour job and yet I work in tech and hire people with 100k+ salaries and have pretty much never seen a cover letter on a resume….
I used to back in the day but def not anymore!
Cover letter for an $18 an hour job?
“Hi, I have been lifting boxes for a long time and how efficiently I lift could never across in a resume. I’ve lifted boxes in big warehouses and small warehouses. Even an old warehouse. I also used my lifting skills to get a kitten out of a tree. I really want to lift boxes for you.”
I saw a meme that was like “why do I need to write a fan fiction love letter to work at your company… desperate much?”
I'm going to second a lot of what's been said. I'm on my second career.
My first career, just out of college, required a lot of job changes (annually was pretty common, if not more frequently). Never made more than about $40k and I think I sent one cover letter in 15 years.
I'm now on my second career. In 14 years, I've had 6 positions at 3 marque companies and I've written 2 cover letters. The first was at the request off my hiring manager when I changed careers so I could demonstrate how my skills transferred between industries to support his decision to hire me with his manager. The second was for a dream role that would have combined my experience from both industries (didn't get that position 😢).
If a company requires one for the application, I've got a generic one, but I do update it with each application to include the company and position title (takes less than 90 seconds).
As a hiring manager, I almost never read a cover letter (there's rarely one included anyway). If I were on the fence between 2 candidates, I may consider a cover letter if I was trying to decide between 2 finalists.
To me, a cover letter is an opportunity to set yourself apart, but that can backfire. I proofread my work thoroughly and regularly and typically ask for a second set of eyes on a new document I've prepared, and I've still discovered typos after submitting a resume to several companies 🤬. Add in the fact that (the grammar nazis will hate this one) there are few hard and fast rules in the English language (especially in written form and that can change across industries, too) and a lot of preference, you're simply adding another possible point of rejection. Oxford comma? Two spaces at start of a sentence? Double spaced? Margins? Was or were? Infinitives? Capitalization? Apostrophes?
Ok but why do others say that cover letters are redundant or to not waste your time if they’re not required?
Does the application ask for a cover letter? Or just say “optional, click here to add one”?
HM, I’m just curious why a cover letter would significantly increase the applicants’ odds? Does this position require advanced writing skills or very specific technical skills? Respectfully, I assume that it doesn’t if it’s paying $18/hr and an entry level position. With AI on the rise cover letters can be pre-drafted now-a-days, so the candidate’s previous experience would be my primary focus.
Any one have any data on how many and/or what type of companies require/use a cover letter in the hiring process? Would love to see the statistics if it exists.
I would love to have cover letters for the roles I hire for (stellar grammar, spelling and proofing are key skills I need), but my company only lets recruiters pass along the resume (scrubbed of any identifying info to try and prevent bias, unconscious or not). I never see a cover letter even when I request it.
I don’t know how it’s done, but considering the thousands of applications they must process, I’m sure they must have something they use.
I've never used a cover letter
