I am wondering if US dominance would now start fading rather quickly because of the Middle East situation. I don’t think it’s in the US’s control to end this war, and Iran would ask for something substantial to stop attacking our allies. This is a difficult situation—one that would make our competitors very happy.

It's more than about time we were less concerned with global "dominance" and started fixing all of the stuff wrong in this country. For whatever reason Republicans have this awesome track record of spending billions and trillions on wars, tax breaks for the rich, etc., etc. How about we worry about our domestic quality of life for awhile and invest her, within our actual country for the ppl living here.

In addition, what’s getting lost in all this madness is that there is still a partial government shutdown and TSA agents are going without their paychecks. If Republicans care so much about the security of America that we have to go to war with a country that isn’t a direct threat to us, why are we not addressing the partial government shutdown which is more an immediate and domestic threat?

Starting to fade? The gap between US and the rest of the world has been narrowing for years. The abandonment of Ukraine and embrace of Putin while China is strengthening did far more damage than invading Iran.

Military supremacy is not what made the US the leader of the free world. America is no longer a symbol of freedom and democracy and other countries have no interest in following our lead.

The war is just the latest way Trump is kneecapping our influence in the world. His brainless tariffs have forced other countries to make trade deals without the US. Removing key intelligence entities make us less safe. Threatening allies' sovereignty (Canada, Greenland) means they have no reason to come to our aid. Killing USAID removed our one source of influence is scores of countries. And on and on. When this nightmare of a presidency is over, hopefully we'll have a shred of influence left to rebuild. It could be the beginning of the end of America as the global superpower, though.

Hehehe you still think the US is a global superpower. Just another loose grenade now like Russia and North Korea, but with more weapons

You look at US dominance militarily in Iran compared to Russian failures in Ukraine and somehow think this is showcasing US decline?

The advantage that Iran has is that the IRGC is much more organized, larger and sophisticated than the Taliban ever was. Iran has shown the world that they don’t need nuclear weapons to afflict major damage, now or in the future. There is no off ramp here where the U.S. looks like it “won” short of regime change, and then ensuring the newer/friendlier regime stays in power. That’s precisely the “forever war” that no one wants in this country. We couldn’t do that in Afghanistan and we undoubtedly cannot do that in Iran, which is a much bigger country.

This was has also shown that the U.S. military (just like Russia) is unprepared for war in the 21st century. It’s not about having the most aircraft carriers, the largest army, the most planes or ships - countries like Ukraine and Iran have shown that you can wage asymmetric warfare using cheap autonomous air and sea drones, missiles in addition to guerrilla warfare tactics established in the 20th century. Given that we have nukes, the U.S. and Russia military will always be a threat - but all that will do is kick off a military arms race for the middle powers to acquire nukes too, especially because the U.S. has lost itself as a trusted ally.

It is a genuine question worth discussing. Remember, we can solve our challenges only through discussions. By labeling our own people with prejudiced notions, we will only become weaker.

Don’t overestimate Iran’s own bargaining position here. Most leadership is dead and they had to kill 30,000 protesters in January to stay in power. They aren’t “winning” either.

Trump lies a lot

McK1 is
1) spouting propaganda on the number of protesters killed which has LONG since been debunked
2). Ignoring that keeping the strait closed is a low effort, low risk, high reward outcome for Iran.

They won strategically the moment this war started as it has amplified their power not reduced it.

Yes definitely

If Iran will become a retreat without victory then others will understand they need no longer fear the us.
