I would say pay for performance is most important to me. I am one of the hardest working people you will ever meet and deserve to be compensated for how hard that I work. It can be really hard to balance all three though, I have noticed that at companiess.

Yes I hate this! I know a person at my place of work who gets by with doing to bare minimal on claims and not what they are supposed to but definitely kiss Fannies and I think this is how they get away with such things.
Performance. There's nothing worse for morale than high performers getting paid the same amount as people that do half the work they do.
"Just doing my job"? Producing twice as much work as others is not just doing your job. It's doing 2 people's jobs. And there's no point in doing that if you get paid the same as those who do half the work you're doing.
Performance. Isn't that what should always be most important? Or am I just naive?

Part of the reason for my question is to understand what motivates people. Some people seek out skills, rather than more money and when I read the article, I wondered the same thing.

Pay for skill for me because I feel if you are really good at what you do and producing good numbers along with the time you have been there they should feel like they can not afford to lose you. But, everyone unfortunately is replaceable.
Very true on both parts! It feels good when recognized, if they do.
