Good morning. I am currently a senior associate in BugLaw, and I have applied to several trial attorney jobs in Chicago offices of federal agencies since the start of the pandemic. According to usajobs.gov, my applications to the DOJ and CFTC were “referred,” and my application to the SEC was received and my GS scale verified. But I haven’t received any updates on these applications in over a month. Does anyone here have any insights on these or on federal hiring generally? Thanks!
Anyone have experience at the FTC?

First, congrats and good luck.
It depends - when I interview I do one round b/c I know pretty much right away if I’m going to be able to work with this person or not. I may ask my manager or biz partner to interview also.
My recommendation is get familiar with the language in the job req and pair your skill set with it conversationally during the interview process. Wish I knew which dept you were applying to.
When you say you’d know right away if you could work with the person or not obviously you are looking at personality traits.Which is different to your actual suggestion of getting familiar with the language in the profile. If the candidate is great at his job skills and matches the job profile, would you still hire him if you think you can’t work with the person?
I just had a similar conversation with a buddy of mine that just got a new job at Advia CU as a TMO: being your genuine self is your best shot at getting the job. People come in nervous and overselling themselves, and you can set yourself apart by being direct and approachable.
Agreed - comfortable and relatable works for me. I need to feel like it’s a cultural fit.
