I gave notice after a small pay increase & my firm’s refusal to negotiate (met billable & prof. rqmts). My firm now wants to match new firm’s offer among other reasonable requests to incentivize my stay. New firm is much larger & will plug me into a niche practice to start. Current firm & case load includes a variety of civil litigation matters. My concerns is that old firm will secretly hold the resignation against me & retracting acceptance of the new offer will burn a bridge. What to do?🙏🏻🤔

So you negotiated they said no and now that you’re leaving they want to negotiate? I would leave your current firm just based on how they handle things. Does not seem like a stand up place.

Take the new offer. You resigned for a reason. They might have matched the offer now but you probably won’t get future raises.

like

Go and don't look back! The counter offers don't ever seem to have good success! You need an opportunity for growth. GO!!

like

You also don’t want to be at a place that knows you wanted to leave. Most people have large egos and won’t let that go.

like

Get out of there. They’ll do the same low ball act next comp time.

Take the offer and run.

Once you say you are leaving, it’s always knifes out. I had to tell them I will resign if they don’t fill out the firm portion of the CTAPP report. Knives came out the second month. Do NOT stay. Even if it is a worse offer or worse job. Leave!

like

Take the new offer. It won’t work out at this old place and they’ll always hold that against you.

like

It comes down to how the offer from your old firm was presented. If an associate comes to me and asks for a pay increase that is outside of our standard scale, we have a discussion internally that includes an evaluation of our pay against the market (we do this annually otherwise) and that can drive the discussion. When an associate approaches us with an offer from another firm, we treat that offer as the market. The problem here is that they refused to negotiate the first time.

My advice is to go or stay based on where you feel happier now that you've seen how your firm treated the situation. Don't forget, there are more jobs than these and your career will last decades not months, so you have options.

Jump ship and do what is best for you and your career. Good luck

When a firm behaves that way they are showing you they only ascribe the bare minimum of value necessary to keep you.

I think counter offers should be beating offers by at least 10% to even be considered.

If you do ultimately take the counter, you will need to demand everything in writing and include a provision that The firm cannot fire you on a no-cause basis for the next year or two.

I would leave that’s just so low of them not to value you when it matters most.

like

Go to the new firm. It sounds like it’s a better opportunity anyway. There’s more to this decision than just your current salary.

like

This happened to me. 100% leave. It’s an example of a larger problem - they don’t value you enough.

Please update the post when appropriate, would love to know what you ended up doing.

You made the right choice. Congratulations!

Echoing every other comment, take the new offer.

I had your exact same scenario happen to me. I actually thought your post was originally mine for a second. I was at a boutique firm practicing med mal which was easy going, great colleagues, boss was easy going but after reading posts of people on here with my YOE I knew I should be making a lot more. I was approached by a recruiter for an AmLaw 100 firm for a dramatic pay increase 40k more with monthly, quarterly and yearly bonuses, along with the people to do L&E law. I told my old boss I had an offer and I was leaving, he immediately matched and offered $5k more than the other. I was extremely confused but everyone here helped me; most posts said that once you let them know you’re jumping ship for more money, it will never be the same. Even if you end up staying because they matched, they now know you’re not loyal and you’re willing to jump ship for money and will replace you in a heart beat. I believe there was a statistic someone posted that approx. 90% of people that end up staying get canned within a year. I love my new job, I would go. Good luck.

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.
