I got an offer for a lateral move and accepted but am having second thoughts. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts. 150k salary, southern California, 7.5 years of experience. I am currently doing employment lit and making about the same. I don’t love litigation but feel the skills I have learned are useful. The work is challenging and the hours are long. The new offer is for personal injury pre-litigation. Same salary and probably less stress. Both jobs are remote.

Do what you think will benefit your work life balance and mental health. I know paralegals, myself included, who can make over 100k in NYC, so stick with it, but always keep your options open just as the law firms or corporations you work for do.

Is it $150k base and then a % of everything you settle/win? That's how most PI in Atlanta get paid. But most people I know in PI freaking love it.

Otherwise 150 seems low for California. I'm in ID and make $183k with 7 years experience. Surely the cost of living is higher there.

like

I agree with A1, 150k is really low for 7 YOE. I would only lateral if you’re being offered more, not just work life balance. It might be too late but I would have agreed on 150k base, 10% take of all cases settled in pre-litigation. I wouldn’t ever go into PI without a share of the settlements. I did pre-litigation PI before, it is very easy and can be repetitive. There’s not much of a learning gap in pre-lit, and a cap on how great you can be at pre-lit. If you’re ok with knowing that, and only care about the WLB then enjoy! Pre-lit salaries are always lower, since the real money is in plaintiff litigation. Pre lit stuff is all high volume, settling for nominal amounts in MVAs.

You don’t sound like you have a firm idea of the law you want to practice and what you want to do generally. I’d do some self-exploration, informational interviews, and research so you can be intentional with your career path and job search instead of job hopping. I’m not sure why if you don’t love litigation you’d go into PI pre-lit anyways… it can’t be for money either because that sounds like insurance defense well, particularly based on that salary. If money is the motivator there are way more and better options available, if work/life balance is what you are looking for, also a wide variety of in-house opportunities you could pursue with an employment litigation background.

Hi how do you plan on going back on the offer after having accepted it? It would be burning bridges with that firm right?

like

Oh I’m going to go through with the job since I already accepted.

I’m a 5th year in SoCal and work at a ID firm and my base is 165k + bonuses. That’s pretty low imho especially with high hours.

Thoughts on “special” salary grades. I just found out the VP I was offered is not a grade 12 like most comparable roles (verified). Also not an 11, but an 11A. Slightly higher than an 11, a good bit lower than a 12. All due to the fact that it’s a leap from my current position. Why should that matter…..shouldn’t it pay what it should pay if I am selected, rather that curving down towards my current rate?

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.

Any recommendations for a men's hardshell jacket? It's my first winter in NYC but I'm also an avid hiker and high-altitude mountaineer so I want something that's technical, durable, and well-designed for the outdoors, but also practical for the streets or office. I'm eyeing the Arc'teryx Beta AR or LT and appreciate its use of pit-zips for breathability, but I'd appreciate it even more if I can find a jacket that's a bit more affordable than Arc'teryx. Any recommendations?

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?
