Really sorry to hear you were laid off. Just completely sucks.
I’d say your best approach would be to look on the firms’ websites and see who is hiring and then if they are, find a partner who works in that practice group (or better yet, find the hiring partner themselves) and send an email with something like “Lateral {Insert Group Here} Associate Opportunity”.
The best partners in the practice group to target are the ones that you can establish a connection with (e.g., same law school or undergrad). I even once saw a partner played college baseball like I did and used that as an excuse for why I emailed them.
I took that approach with a number of firms and you’d be surprised how many partners are willing to responded. Not all will, but I’d say more than 50% will.
For the firms that don’t have current openings, similar approach. Find a partner in the practice group that you can form even the tiniest connection with (and again, if you can find the hiring partner, even better). And just send something like “{Insert Firm Name Here} - {Insert Practice Group} Associate”.
Also, I really suggest considering using ChatGPT or other AI platforms to bounce ideas off of. I’m in my mid-30s so I’ve been suspicious of AI lol. But I used it sparingly in the job search for email revision feedback and question or topic ideas. It proved to be really helpful. Especially if you’re having a hard time with phrasing or other stuff like that.
Good luck out there! You’re only a second year, so your level is in high demand. You’ll land on your feet at a better opportunity soon.
I agree with this AA1. Most partner would be happy to not pay the outrageous recruiter fees.

how much website time
It should be pretty easy to get an extension at least to the end of the firm’s fiscal year. I think there are ethical / insurance implications if they represent to the public someone is employed and practicing law there that really isn’t at that point. (Or it was just coincidence that they kept extending mine until fiscal year end and then said they’d need to cut me off, copying in someone on the ethics team.)
Sorry to hear and good luck on the search. As someone expecting the axe soon (recently had the talk), I’m curious how much severance they offered.
They offered two months but I asked for 3. Ended at 3 months.
