Employers WANT you to think it’s taboo.
But talking about it will empower you to know what’s fair in the market
Rising Star
Becuase it has been made a taboo, everyone else is scared even to bring it up now!
Hush-hush here. More open than at previous companies, but it's still not a common topic of conversation. We've all been collectively conditioned to keep that info to ourselves. It's going to take a while to undo that.

Mine is pretty open but it has caused a lot of tension and issues within the workplace.

Personally I'm pretty open about it, it's an employer problem not an employee one.
I never talk about what I earn just because I consider it my own personal business. I have no objection to people talking about what they earn. I do find some of their reasoning skewed, however. Not everyone in the same role will earn the same, there are just too many variables, from experience, education, when they came onboard, and even how good a negotiator they are.

I think openness helps, when handled maturely. I have seen it surface inequities that would never have been fixed otherwise. The discomfort is real, but silence usually benefits the organisation more than the individual.
Mixed. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out what others make, at least a third of the company has access to data you can reverse engineer to figure out anyone's salary.
Plus we operate in states that require disclosure of salary ranges in job ads.
Largely it is open as it is to expose salary inequities

I am not entirely sure how this even works! I tried to look up everywhere that what my colleague is making but couldn't get a hint anywhere.
