I interviewed with Firm A months ago and accepted a position to start this upcoming fall. Group leader called me to offer the position back in November 2020. Besides interviewing with partners at the firms, and diligent follow ups notifying them of my interest to get started, no communication has transpired since. It turns out that I accepted a better offer w/ Firm B for personal reasons and won’t be going to Firm A. What is the best way to notify Firm A? Call/email group leader? Call/email HR?

When in doubt, overdress. They’ll understand why you went full suit.

Ask the recruiter - you don’t want to appear like you don’t fit the culture because you’re in a suit and tie and they’ve built a jeans and t-shirt law firm.
“I saw on your firm website that your culture is casual and creative which sounds amazing! What’s the typical office attire?” Once you get that answer you can dress a notch or two more formal but still aligned with their culture.
Slacks and jacket (matching or not), no tie, remove jacket if it helps. Pick a lighter color, not something somber.
Think of it as showing up for yourself, not for them. It’s about how you see yourself. It’s absolutely great they are casual - but even with friends it takes time to fully relax.
Also, consider what clothing does for us - it affects how we carry ourselves. If a suit makes you feel confident - go with that.
And you can always do a plain-T and suit (always worked out for me as a happy medium)
However you look, you got the interview so they are looking forward to get to know you.
Own whatever you choose - if you stand out, well you got a perfect ice breaker. Let your personality speak.
Best of luck!
Great response!
It’s ok to be dressed up in interviews, people understand
Wear a full suit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. You’re still a lawyer applying to a firm, lawyers understand the need for suits on occasion. But if you’re feeling confident, your “casual and creative” attitude will be able to come through. If you really feel like your normal suit is too stuffy, buy a cool new tie or something.
