Either you are currently significantly overpaid or this company is planning to severely underpay you. What size of public company is hiring an audit manager to be their controller? Is this a business unit controller? Overall congrats to you to go from audit manager to controller of a public company as most require 10-15+ years of experience. If you feel good about the company and its prospects, I’d go for it as you’ll likely get equity in the future if not already part of your offer and comp package and that can be a meaningful figure
Yes it’s a BU controller not a company wide controller
From my experience, having 4-8 year public accounting experience plus industry such as a BU controller will give you an extremely strong resume. If the BU controller doesn’t workout, you’ll have no problem finding another spot or going back to public. The extra commute time sucks but unless you want to make partner, which is becoming less appealing and harder to make these days, I don’t think you can go wrong here
I think only you can answer this. If it were me, I would probably stay where I am as I value quality of life. But it also depends on the career path where you are at and whether you are sick of public accounting.
