Never really thought about it, makes sense though. I don't have time to spend anywhere but work or home, it's really depressing.
This is such an interesting observation. They haven't completely disappeared in the sense that some people do still use these spaces. But they just aren't as relevant in day to day conversations and discourse. Wouldn't include the gym in that category, though.
Yes, this is so true! Places like coffee shops which used to operate as third places now pressure you to leave as soon as possible. I have a little coffee shop by my house where me and my friends meet and hang out, but a lot of people don't have something like that where they can just sit for a few hours without being bothered. That's one thing I love about Europe; it's normal to go to a café and just sit for three, four hours without being bothered.
I learned about the “third place” thing recently. I definitely would suffer if I couldn’t afford mine. 😞
About the only thing I've figured out is to have one or two roommates to afford something.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the digital world. It's connected us in ways never before imagined, allowing us to work remotely, order groceries with a tap, and even find love through algorithms. But at what cost?
