Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Some mix of risk aversion, unemployment and corporate greed (as far as the negotiating hang up is concerned). Put it all together and you've got a scenario where companies can afford to force candidates to jump through hoop after hoop to prove they're the perfect fit.
Yep that sounds about right. For places that say they are desperate to hire, they sure take forever during the hiring process. It is pretty ridiculous how long it takes these days.

That tracks with my experience too….it took forever even though they were very eager to hire
Sounds like the company/hiring team doesn’t know what they want or were waiting for someone else to accept and maybe didn’t.
