I just found out that the remote attorneys on my team get reimbursed for their mileage driving to the office, to include the mileage between their hotel and the office. They also get their parking reimbursed. I’m one of two local attorneys who is forced to work in person 4 days per week and don’t get any of those benefits. Is this normal?

Yes because for them coming in is “extra,” not part of their commute. When you have to travel to somewhere other than your normal work location, don’t you get reimbursed?

You will find that people have negotiated somewhat different deals. I don’t think this is the issue I would make hay about. Instead, I would think about something you really want, and negotiate for that.

like

I would think their salaries are slightly lower. If so, this makes sense.

Remote roles I’ve seen tend to pay a bit less.

like

I have seen remote jobs getting less $$ compensation. But also, you won’t know if you don’t ask.

Why do you care what someone else is making to do a different job?

like

We do the exact same jobs?

How many in office vs remote attorneys? Who had better weapons?

Preemptive attack likely best bet. Remotes probably already planning an attack.

like

Oh boy, there are more of them and the in office crowd is weak, so we’re screwed

If you are in California, it’s to cover your firms ass. Because they work from home, going into work is not part of their normal commute. That makes the mileage an expense that must be reimbursed under CA law.

like

I need to move to CA 😅

So you pay for parking out of pocket? I would have a problem with that.

Agreed A2, but the point is that I am forced to come to the office and therefore have to pay for parking, but my peers get to enjoy the benefits of being almost fully remote and when they come to the office the company pays for 100% of their mileage and parking. It’s absurd.

I took tax law and used to do taxes, and yes it’s normal, as long as it’s not just their home to work. Their hotel to office is normal. Home to work is usually not an allowable write-off. But that wouldn’t keep a business from compensating it if they wanted to. Parking is a normal write-off if you want to ask for it, that might be easier to get than the mileage from home to work since that’s never a write-off.

I’ve recently started work at a very young tech startup. Coming from a big law background, this was a huge change of pace/environment. I’m having a lot of trouble getting used to how unstructured the startup is. It feels like hire ups give a set of instructions then talk as if they don’t remember, or then decided rules A, B, C and D applies without being clear this was the case. Is this just the general startup environment? If you experienced this before, how did you deal with It?

I’ve doing this for a good number of years. I think I depleted almost completely my interest in this business. When I’m out of the office or during the weekends I get into a “leave me alone state” and don’t want to know anything about the office. I actually just want to get in the agency, do the best I can within the time I have available, and get out. In a business where “the most committed wins” this is not an ideal mindset, but I’m done. Anyone else experiencing something similar?

For career growth, what shall be my ideal path ahead?
1. Only concentrate on Integration
2. Continue Integration for some years, then switch to Functional modules (in this case, after how many years should I ideally switch)

And what shall be the ideal time to switch companies?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?
