You will take home approximately 70% of your paycheck before 401k allocations. At your salary that will be a little under 4K a month net.
Take all of your current bills (car payment, car insurance, etc.) and deduct that from your net monthly salary. What is remaining will cover your rent and lifestyle ( food, entertainment, etc.) so choose wisely. I would suggest living as close to work as humanly possible to lower lifestyle expenses (gas, eating out) and possibly be able to take advantage of the Marta transportation system which will help with overall cost.
Sorry if this is more info than you needed. I’m a mom so I can’t help myself! Good luck!
At your age, room mates under $900 total unless you’re not worried about savings. Might not be living in o4w
I’d definitely recommend roommates at your age. Save up a little then as your career continues up… look into a place on your own.
Separately though I see a lot of older folks trying to rent out single bedrooms or basement apartments for reasonable amounts on NextDoor in the city so may be worth looking there too. Usually the lower the rent price the more sketchy an area is so definitely do a drive by of your potential living spot at night to check the vibe before you sign anything (whether living alone or with roommate’s)
Yea definitely do the roommate thing. It’s a good way to meet new people & keep costs down.
For reference, 6 years ago I had a salary of 60k and my rent for a 1/1 was $1100. I was able to pay my bills but didn’t have much left over for savings.
I agree with what others have suggested, getting roommate is a great option. Plus if you have good roommate you get a live in friend lol
Additional info that might be helpful: 6 years ago I lived at Camden Vantage near Jackson St Bridge for $1100. I just checked their current rent prices and they have 1/1’s going for $1179 which isn’t too bad.
Camden Vantage isn’t the best apartment in Atlanta but it was a good first apartment for the price.
$60k-$20k in 401k contributions- 30% taxes is $28k a year (not including insurance/other stuff that will be deducted from your check). You will take home roughly $2,333 a month, so you want to spend 25-33% of that on rent. If you want to come close to maxing out your retirement account (no shame in just putting 10-15% away now, but compound interest is a life hack for investing for retirement so you want to start asap) then you can afford $583-$770/month in rent. You probably won’t live ITP with that, but you can rent out a room in someone’s house or split a house with a bunch of roommates while you get your career started. Remember to change jobs every 2-3 years and keep building up.
100%. I realize that doing what I did 10 years ago isn’t going to work as well/at all now that rents are double what they used to be. I think we have the same idea, though. Try to get stable and avoid paying too much for rent and build from there.
Definitely get something near a Marta station so you can use it for commuting. It’s a time and money saver.
Cabbagetown is in Fulton County and is one of the best places to live in Georgia. Living in Cabbagetown offers residents an urban feel and most residents own their homes. In Cabbagetown there are a lot of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. Residents of Cabbagetown tend to be liberal.

Just popping in to say do NOT live at Amli Buckhead…..they are the worst apartment complex I’ve ever dealt with.
I appreciate everyone’s response. The job is located in Downtown Atlanta. It’s a development program so the salary will increase after a year. I was hoping I would be able to afford a place on my own but everyone seems to advise against it. If anyone has any other ideas or comments please let me know. Thanks again!
M1 for the price and location it’s hard to beat considering almost all 2 bed 2 bath highrise go for over 3k.
If I were you I’d live maybe 30 mins outside of Atlanta. You can get a one bedroom apartment for around $1,500
Where is your job located at? As someone Pointed out a roommate is your best idea.
