What are some of the things that were a MUST when buying your first home and what were some things that you were more flexible with and why? I’m having a discussion with my partner about what we absolutely need and what can be worked on later. Also, any regrets?

Building our first home now. Location was the most important because location is the one thing you can’t change about your house.

Minnesota! I love it here. We did not buy land and build because yes it’s more expensive but we went with a developer and chose all our options and floor plan. Much cheaper.

I’m in a tornado-prone region so a basement is a must-have. So is at least a one car garage (but it doesn’t have to be attached), and a yard where I can do some landscaping and maintain or put in a nice garden. Most everything else I’m willing to be flexible on, but with the caveat that with things like a bad kitchen/bath, not having central AC or gas stove, etc., the house has to be priced right for me to redo/add them.

One thing that was really important for me was having a garage big enough for two cars. My husband and I both wanted to be able to park inside, especially with the bad weather.

30% gross is $2750/mo 😱
Others say I can afford 600k houses but that seems irresponsible and ridiculous.
My current rent is $1750 for a small 1bd1ba (cheap) but I’m sacrificing my safety in my neighborhood. No frills apt.

How many homes should you tour minimum, and how many offers did you put in before you closed? I don't want to be too hasty and choose something just because, but I also think continuing to see homes isn't really making my decision any easier. Thanks!
