Remove your email application from your phone for the duration of your vacation. Do NOT check your email during your trip. Trust your out of office to work to redirect email traffic and trust your support team to handle things that come up. If you do not hold this boundary for yourself, nobody else will.
Exactly. And remember - you teach people how to treat you. Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. And by not responding, you’ve taught them all something by managing their expectations.
I always say something like
“Hi X,
I’m currently OOO without immediate access to my laptop / files etc whatever it may be. However, [replacements name] should be able to circulate the document.
Best,
Name]
This doesnt ruin the relationship but sets the boundary that youre out and have coverage
I would respond if you can respond easily, because you've already stressed yourself out by checking that email and if you cared enough to post about it here it's probably going to keep bothering you if you try to ignore it. If it would take you logging in to your computer to look for something I'd just respond and say you're not in a position to do that right now but {XYZ} should be able to help. It's standard for people at my firm to put on their internal OOO for vacation that they won't be checking email regularly and if there's something urgent, to please call. So I do that, and then operate on the presumption that if they haven't called, it's not an emergency.
Power move: Go into the shared drive and delete the file.
Don’t reply until you’re home. That is definitely not an emergency that warrants interrupting your vacation. If you get any blowback you could always lie and say you lost your phone at the airport or in an uber.
Easy tiger, being connected is part of being successful. But you still shouldn't reply for a day or two, and when you do ask if it's been handled and if not copy someone who should be doing this.
I can’t understand why we have assistants if we don’t use them for administrative tasks

This happened to me while in Riviera Maya at a firm I was at. “Can you pull x regs for me?” He absolutely could have himself.
Just ignore them, you wet lettuce!
Respond. Just because your on vacation doesn't mean you stop working. Do you want to keep your job?
Forward it to a paralegal.
Think about how you want to handle this type of situation for the next 10 years. I’m in favor of A) don’t respond, or B) wait a while and then ask if this got handled, with a hand-off to someone who can deal with it if not. Your choice. Either way, put down the email and enjoy the time with your family.
And reapply that sunscreen while you enjoy the beautiful Hawaiian weather!
Not a chance in hell would I reply.
