I just got laid off and I’m job hunting in a tough economy. I need to hear your stories of succeeding after huge professional setbacks.

Fired from my first lawyering job as a litigator. They were super sweet about it, but I was not a good litigator. Spent the next 6 months trying to break into what I really wanted to do, which was transactional work. Found a law-adjacent position to pay the bills, and 4 months later bumped into a guy who became my mentor and managing partner with dream job. Been at that firm for 10 years, where I’m considered a rock star, and made equity partner. Super happy with my practice and my law partners.

There can be a happy ending to these dark times.

Real estate litigation. I’m great at researching, but had zero desire to go to court. I’m much happier as a transactional lawyer. Still have never made a court appearance, and intend to keep it that way.

And OP - my quote is that no success story is any good unless there’s some adversity that has to be overcome. It feels terrible when you’re in it, but this is just the start of your amazing story.

A family member died 2 days before I took the bar. I failed. Ramped up my drinking. Failed the bar again. And again. Took non-barred doc review projects to get by. Delivered food with door dash in between projects. This went on until I embarrassingly passed the bar two years post law school.

Shortly after I passed, I quit drinking and replaced booze with exercise. Then I got a crappy job doing debt collection work for $55k but at last, it was a full time job! Stayed there for a year and then got an ID job making double. Stayed there for 5 years and lateraled to a higher paying job making $170k. I’m no Big Law hot shot, but I like my job and get paid.
Don’t give up on yourself. Cliche, but failure is temporary. 💪

This is very similar to my story. Very close family member took a turn with her cancer during bar studies and passed shortly before the bar exam. My school counselor told me to withdraw and take the next one (terrible advice). I then switched states and failed the bar. Twice. I stuck with law and went into Plaintiff's PI work once I passed. Eventually went to what I thought was my dream job in-house for a Fortune 500 and was MISERABLE with transaction work. Now Im back at a mid-size firm in Plaintiff's work and much happier being paid MUCH better.
This probably wont be my forever job but its keeping my family afloat while my husband has gone through the tech layoffs over the past 2 years (also brutal).

If anything, my experience has shown me what I value and need to prioritize.

I graduated in 07 and joined the state government and was laid off from what would have been my career job after only a year and had to job hunt in 08 and it was rough. I did doc review and worked for a small firm it was very humbling. I worked for myself and worked with amazing clients and did everything I wanted to do. 1st chair trials and appeals. Stressful but ended up being personally professionally and financially rewarding. There is so much work out there for good lawyers as far as people needing help. Today I’m working in house.

I was fired from my first job as a lawyer (fwiw, the two partners running that crappy little firm were disbarred years later). I was fortunate enough to land a job as a plaintiff’s lawyer within a few weeks of being terminated, and have gone on to have a stable career since then. I am in-house today. This is a temporary setback - apply broadly, keep going, and you will land on your feet.

I was lucky - rhe employer that fired me gave me two weeks’ notice prior to my effective end date, and I interviewed for the new position during that period. I did not volunteer any info regarding my employment status, and the new employer did not ask, so the transition was seamless. That said, if I had had to explain any sort of gap, I would have said that the firm was not well-managed, which was the truth. Most people understand that not well managed = dysfunctional.

I agree with the previous comment that there’s a need for good lawyers. Beware of recruiters and prospective employers who discourage you by saying things like “a break in employment is career suicide.” They’re probably trying to manipulate you into taking low-paying jobs with them.

I was laid off form my first job, partly because of my inability to communicate and report my work and value. I made a training abroad and then did my LLM. I went back to my home country and became a consultant and taught at my alma mater. I kept on working hard and didn’t give up. Focus on what’s your forte and what you bring to the table, there is always room for improvement, that doesn’t make you a shit professional but a human being. Focus on your growth not on your fallouts and you will be fine sooner or later.

I am seeking new employment, I was recently laid off due to lack of work. I would very much appreciate any leads. I have a Bs in Construction Management and over 15 years experience with Revit and AutoCAD and 7 years of plumbing design. I have solid references and impeccable work ethic. I truly enjoy what I do. Working remotely the last three years has become a way of my life and supports our current situation well, therefore I am seeking a similar role but will consider other opportunities.
