Just finished a brief in a hurry, blowing right through an (internal) deadline, and it's complete dog shit. I'll be fired today for sure

It probably won’t be as bad as you think! But perhaps consider what could have gone differently. We’re you slammed with other work? Did the procrastination fairy pay a visit? Did someone give you an unreasonably short turnaround? Just find ways to keep yourself from being in this spot again in the future :) good luck!

Partners often don’t know what they’re actually asking for. They think the project is straight forward because their memory of the law is wrong, missing critical factors, or just through a pair of rose colored glasses. Plus, if you’re unfamiliar with the facts, their summary version of things won’t be sufficient for you to pen a decent brief. Sometimes, my partners actually forget they gave me a deadline or the details of their instructions. Sometimes it’s a no-win situation.

Do what you can with the resources allotted and keep doing it. They remember more that you showed up and completed a project than they do the actual product most times. Heck, how often do they even read the brief after filed? Hearings get delayed, cases get settled, or the partner just has
their own outline in their head for motions hearings and they only glance through the brief before hand. If it’s good enough, they’ll probably (eventually) just be thankful they didn’t have to do it themselves. Rinse and repeat.

like

Don't fret! It could be not as bad as you think (which is uaually the case haha)

like

Honestly sometimes there are unrealistic deadlines and that’s just the quality that can be produced given the workload

like

Perfection is the worst enemy of “good enough” my friend. Learn to accept when something is “good enough” and it will change your world.

like

This happened to me and it was absolutely because of an imaginary internal deadline that the partner made up. He said - well I can imagine this will be due in a month (no indication it will even need to be due this summer) so finish it by Monday.

Give me four days to write a single-line, 50 page memo in 4 days and that’s the work product you’ll get 🙄

like

Look hard at how you did this project and internalize ways to get faster. Many of my associates start out using an insanely inefficient process that must be a standard in law schools nowadays because almost all of them do the same thing - draft and revise entirely on their computers with no outline and little hard thinking before they start. I can and routinely do compose and file really strong 30 page briefs in a day, divided roughly in thirds: (1) thinking and outlining in detail; (2) dictating a complete draft from the outline, using an iPhone app to record and transmit the dictation in chunks, so they can begin transcribing while I’m still dictating; and (3) editing printed drafts of the brief by hand and using a different iPhone app to scan and send them for word processing. If you can’t do this you probably are working inefficiently, which can result in issues like today’s rush.

I hope it turns out better than you expect, but I respectfully suggest that you don’t blindly follow the guidance from several posters who in essence are saying “keep doing things the same way and if it goes badly it’s someone else’s fault.”

like

Winscribe for the dictation and Scanner pronto scan and send markups.

Yeah no kidding about the impossible deadlines. Once had partner make me an 8 page affidavit in 30 mins! He was still upset 🙄

Hi Sharks 🦈,

Need some suggestions: My current company is on a layoff spree and 2 rounds are already done and I can foresee another round coming very soon.

While I am trying to switch to other companies, I’m not able to reveal the real reason from my side for the job change, as if I say, it’s because of layoff fears than it’ll reduce my negotiation power.

What other reasons can I give as I’ve just completed 9 months here and it’s too soon for any other company to take me in.

Follow up post to my last post…My husband was laid off from the company where I also work. I am feeling really isolated / depressed about working and moving forward. I’m also getting to a stage where I’m really sad that people haven’t reached out to either my husband or myself to send well wishes or provide support. It’s like they don’t know what to say or I make them feel awkward so they don’t bother…I’m trying to focus on a few that have been supportive but it’s hard…Any words of advice? 😞

After 6 years of temporary contracts and unstable situations, I find my dream job in my dream company. All of a sudden the world goes upside down and I get laid off. I start sending hundreds of applications, with only 2 recruiters getting back to me to say I don’t have experience for the job (this is how it works in Italy). Add a terrible health situation in my family and it seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Ugh. 😞

Also I’m sorry if this is the wrong bowl to post in.

Hi there

I am in need of some serious advice. I have been continuously harassed, ridiculed and spoken down to by a coworker who’s now even “threatened” to get me fired etc. We do not have an HR department and the only manager I can go to is also mistreated and not taken seriously. What do I do? I’m terrified.

If you know of anyone looking for marketing specialists or would like to network let me know. Id love to connect!

I'm feeling a lot of anger towards my manager (now he's acting normal but there were moments where he was condescending/dismissive/mocked my and others work/arrogant/said stuff was "wrong" constantly/belittling the difficulty of tasks etc. in the past project).
Maybe it is "standard chewing out" but it bothered me a lot. So much that I find myself still getting all fired up inside thinking about it...
Idk how to let go of this :/ Thoughts?
