I know someone at a great company who applies to jobs just to “test the market,” even though he has no intention of leaving and has turned down offers. I get wanting to see what’s out there, but it does make me wonder is that taking a spot from someone who actually needs the job? And how much time are hiring teams spending on candidates who were never serious? It kind of feels like going on dates with no intention of it going anywhere. Curious how common this is and where people draw the line.

If you are curious about the market and have the time to do resumes and interviews, why not? Sometimes the better offer lands on you when you are not looking. I think hiring managers and above can tell whether one is job hopping vs truly needing the job for a living. I once interviewed two final candidates - one felt bored at the current job, the other one needed a job after a layoff. I voted for the latter as we wanted to place someone who is serious enough to stay in the role for a few years.

It’s always good to stay prepped for interviews. I see nothing wrong. In the process, they could find something that is a great fit and actually take the offer.

I think it’s just part of the game, unfortunately. A lot of times employees can use an offer as leverage to get more money at their current company. This happens all the time at my company. It’s unfortunate but it’s just part of it

I applied to a job at KPMG and did the first two rounds of interviews, general interview, then case study and competency. Never before have I had such a positive feedback at the end of an interview of the 2nd, both said really like me, I did well etc.
It's now been 3 weeks since the interview and I still haven't heard back from the team other than the odd HR email saying they are following up with them. Is there something going on internally, I.e hiring freeze in the London office atm?

Just found out that end of the year I will be promoted from analyst directly to VP and since it’s such a large jump I’ll be the lowest paid VP in asset management at only $135k TC. Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?

I'm in finance/tech FPA, looking to go back to the defense industry for a 25% increase in TC. But wanted to see if I should leverage the new salary with current company to see if they'll match.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Current TC 103K [88/15], offer 125k base [+discretionary bonus].
