I really hate my job but I need it until I find a new one (which could take a long time). Any advice on how to stay positive and motivated when I’m actively trying to get out??

When your job starts to piss you off, send a job application. I know it seems silly, but that's what I do. It makes me feel like I'm a little bit in control of my life when my job makes me feel small and powerless.

I used fear to motivate me. I remembered how awful it was being out of work for 10 months after being laid off and trying to find a new job and worrying about my dwindling savings and paying the bills. I was so glad to have the job I got even though it turned out to be 60-70 hours a week, for a 30% paycut. After a year, I realized it was not going to get better, and I started looking for work and found one 6 months later. In the meantime, I still had to grind my way through a heavy workload and a 4-hour commute round trip 4 out of 5 days a week. What kept me going despite serious sleep deprivation and mental exhaustion was knowing that having the paycheck (even though it was barely paying all the bills with almost nothing to put in savings) was better than worrying about how to pay the bills. I just remembered the fear I felt in the latter part of those 10 months, and that helped motivate me to stick it through until I found another job (which I started 6 weeks ago). Hang in there, be persistent, and try to take care of yourself, and you will come out the other end!

fear is a great motivation! Going to take this to heart thx

When I get really sick of my job I just try to focus on my inspirations. I'll read something by a favorite author, or listen to some music I can relate to. And I'll try to find something in my work that I can apply some inspiration to. Or, to keep it simple, I try to amuse myself while working. If you're planning an exit, an extra thing to do is do some work that will look good as you're interviewing for another job. That idea should keep you engaged, as you're working on your escape plan.

Not so ironically, it’s my morning ritual to listen to head bangers before walking into the office.

Pretend you are a consultant, not an employee. Distance yourself emotionally and care less about the outcome and things you can’t control.

I love this one. It’ll also help you frame up your resume by being more focused on tangible KPIs and success metrics. Interviewer like the STAR model. Start chalking up the Rs (Results)

First off, I'm very sorry you're going through that. I just went through that last year and it was a very challenging 4-5 months.

The way I stayed positive was to reflect on all of the things outside of work that I am grateful for as well as seek out some emotional support from family and friends. As cheesy as it might sound my family and friends were such a great support system for getting me through it. Venting and Talking to them about the job I hated and the coworkers that were gaslighting and micromanaging.

While job hunting, I reminded myself that every job I have ever had, was better than the last. More money, more experience, bigger challenges, better coworkers and lots of growth. What I was working for (my new job) would be better than what I have right now. This mindset was extremely helpful to keep me waking up in the morning, keep me working at the job I had, and keep me motivated to keep applying.

After 4 months I found a great job, better compensation, fantastic coworkers, and I'm having a great time where I am.

Keep pushing - the situation you are in will not last forever. You got this

I recently went through this same transition, so I can sympathize. One thing that actually helped me more than I realized was writing out exactly how I was feeling. I would just jot in my notebook about how frustrated I was, how long the process felt, how I was losing hope, etc. Something about getting it out instead of bottling it up was therapeutic.

Something I learned from my last employer that I took into my current employer. If there is a new type of role that your want to pursue at another company, try to take on that type of work in your current job. It’ll help you build your resume as well as see if you really like that work. I know that doesn’t always line up, but it’ll also help you justify your decision if/when you do leave. You can tell HR - I’m leaving to do more XXX, I asked to do it here and was told no.

Like MS1 said, I'd focus on your passions and hobbies outside of work. Clock in and out without giving them any extra time, and take your PTO - even just a random day off here & there. Best of luck!

I will!!

Since iOS 14 changes, Facebook ads isn't the same anymore. Why?

A. >75% iOS users denied tracking. They are no longer tracked across websites/apps. Facebook lost its edge.
B. Targeting and conversion tracking aren't as effective anymore.
C. Many advertisers have been migrating their budgets from Facebook to Apple and Amazon ads.

What's your experience? Let's all learn.

I recently accepted a job that I quite overqualified for because I’m in need of a job. I got hired as a Marketing Manager and work directly with the Marketing Director. Come to find out my director is still in school and has absolutely no marketing experience. She’s been with the company for 4 months. They seem to want to utilize my complete skills set and make up for her lack of marketing knowledge but maintain her position as director and pay me a entry level marketing manager salary. Advice?

So i’m thinking to develop my career as a Digital marketer who can design/ code in 5 years. Digital marketing is so broad, dont know where to start. I have a little experience in Google analytics & Marketo. Any recommendations or advice ? Thank you!

I’m job searching right now and applied for a job I was a little overqualified for just to shoot my shot and get my foot in the door with a great brand. The hiring mgr took the time to email me to tell me I was overqualified and offered to help me get connected to his network. He’s been so kind and helpful and I’m kind of in shock at his generosity. Even if an offer doesn’t come from it, is it weird if I send him a Starbucks gift card or something as a thank you? What’s appropriate?

I’m interviewing for a start up and the role sounds interesting. Usually for the “test” part of the interview I’ve had to analyze data. This company wants me to develop a growth strategy that outlines key initiatives for growth, different opportunities, experiments I’d run, KPIs, and working cross-functionally.

Is this a lot for an interview?

I’m a little afraid of doing all this work to then just have them take my ideas and not hire me.
