Every grading period, I try to integrate a variety of graded assignments - online using Schoology (similar to Canvas) with drop downs, fill in the blanks, open ended response, multiple choice, matching AND foldables, digital or paper storyboarding, hand written essays with illustrations and rubrics, typed essays on Word, paper texts with annotations, videos, posters, brochures, flyers, menu options, PowerPoint, QR codes, Padlet, etc.
I think it’s important to include assignments that require creativity and the use of different tools and technology integration! I want my students to be able to use their strengths and a variety of tools to demonstrate their knowledge in different ways, not just clicking answers on a screen.
Although my team doesn’t like the creative stuff because it takes more time to do and to grade, it makes my students well rounded and more prepared for the real world. Plus, it’s more enjoyable to display, complete and see their strengths and weaknesses. It’s all about BALANCE and giving students a variety of OPPORTUNITIES to try new things that will help them determine their strengths, weaknesses, talents, and interests. Also, if they are not good at something (like drawing or designing), I want them to be able to use tools available to them to still do their best and try! But what if it’s your strength?! When planning the grading period, I am always conscious about ensuring a variety of graded assessments. Unfortunately, an A+ in my class does not equate to an A+ in another class on a variety of levels, but that is above my pay grade.
I have done gallery walks with just QR codes and the QR takes them to their Padlet and peers can post feedback and students can setup how they want their feedback from their Padlet. (Long run-on…too tired to edit!) 🤣

I use a mix. Digital has the advantage of computer grading and immediate feedback for students. But as a math teacher, I want to see their work. So I also have a lot of paper assignments that let me see how they’re thinking during the process of problem-solving.
With the easy access to technology, students find so many opportunities to cheat or AI their way through assignments. Also, they are on computers all the time, the thought of getting more unplugged opportunities is supebappealing.
Well...that should have been "super appealing." I love the way autocheck always catches what it supposes are errors and tries to fix my typing, but then doesn't catch "supebappealing"!
My assignments are usually on paper. The kids often tell me that they prefer it. It takes a smidge of extra work on my part but I don’t mind. The young teachers think I am dreadfully old fashioned but I don’t care.
Paper copies are a good break from digital work. I love the convenience of having stuff on a LMS, but if teachers are not careful, that convenience can make us lazy and lackadaisical.
