The Eyes on the Prize documentary is fantastic. The Bill of Rights Institute is a great resource. I also use a movie called Separate but Equal that is historically accurate and very entertaining. The only problem is it is a very long film.

I like to go more in depth on the stories of Emmitt Toll and Claudette Colvin. They are really engaging for my students since they're both teenagers as well. Thinking about these events from the point of view of another teenager usually hits them pretty hard.

Recently incorporated the biography of Claudette Colvin into my lessons, was really well received by my students

I love showing "Thurgood" starring Lawrence Fishburne.

Show them the protest scenes from Forrest Gump, from when he shows up at the rally to when Jenny gets on the bus. It really shows the scope of the protests and can lead into discussions about CR in general.

At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.

I’m looking at lessons with a pro. They offer packs of 30 min (6-pack) and 60 min (3-pack) sessions. Is there a benefit to one over the other? Is 30 too short or 60 too long?

Ok. I am teaching music in person and when we have a case of COVID in the school, I push into the classroom for 10 days. Are there music websites that are free that I can go to for quick lessons when I’m asked to teach in the classroom. I was told today with 5 minutes to prepare that we had a case, I couldn’t teach in my room and I couldn’t do the ukulele unit I had planned. I had to think on the fly and quickly came up with a BrainPop for them. I’d like to find a few more music sites.

How do you best support your students who do not speak English? I have four ELL’s in my 6th grade ELA class and they don’t receive push-in or pull-out Bilingual support during my class. Do you pull them for small group to provide instruction separately or do you just try to use google translate to translate your lessons and the work? Any best practices? I’d love some help.

Hey fellow Disney Lovers,

I generally have a few lessons in which I can use Pixar shorts to teach students how to identify and discuss literary signposts, how to identify and explain the development of theme, character traits, and other narrative elements. What are some of your favorite shorts? I am trying to incorporate activities where my students get to choose their own clips for independent practice with these skills and need a variety to draw from.

Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!

London folk, question for you: do firms and offices in London not recruit candidates directly? I hardly see positions advertised on the websites of these firms but there are vacancies that they seem to recruit for through recruiters. What’s the deal here? Does it make sense to approach firms by yourself at all? Would appreciate any insight I can get on the matter. Thank you!

Moving to Houston and am looking in the Garden Oaks and Heights areas but I can’t get over the the new million dollar homes next to the $800k houses built in 1980’s. Does anyone live in an area like this? Is there a name for this? Other than a gentrified area? What are some things to consider if buying in an area like this? Are neighbors ok knowing that they’ll eventually be bought out or get to a point they can’t afford the property taxes? TIA for any insights!
