I report to VP legal who reports to CLO. VP legal is a better lawyer — issue spotting, legal knowledge — but not great at presenting to the c-suite. She is too anxious and it shows. On rare occasions when I present to C suite, i crush it — I don’t care how I look or what they think of me. Instead, I just focus on matter at hand.

I think my boss feels threatened. She has a decade more professional experience, and I have no desire to take her spot.

What should I do?

Talk to the CLO and suggest VP get coaching. Companies spend bank on that kind of stuff for execs. VP needs toastmasters.

It's literally your job and your skip level's job to communicate about your manager... If you aren't having regular meetings with your skip manager and discussing your manager, you are not in a healthy hierarchy.

Maybe you should find a VP spot somewhere else.

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

Hello, hoping for some input on how to time a job change. At a startup - we are doing well now but unless we have complete turnover in management I don’t think we have a bright future post-COVID. I could coast here 1-2 years before having to look. I’ve been here for a little under a year. This is my second in house job after 10 years at the same firm. The market is hot now, probably won’t be in 1-2 years and I am getting interest for good roles. OTOH I don’t want to look like a job hopper.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?
