I was in a similar situation and found that I could reduce the meetings after I’d been in role for a full year and could judge when teams needed more or fewer touch points. I also knew people better and the calls were easier (not easy!). The other thing I started doing was taking notes on the “small talk” topics so I could warmly open the calls without pressure to make conversation from scratch.
Well said!
Here are a few tips (my wife is very introverted but adapted throughout her career):
1. Seek out some coaching that focuses on your personality for individualized assistance in the adjustment phase that you are presently experiencing.
2. Seek ways to streamline the meeting frequency as you settle into the role. This may not be possible in the short term (main point for the first tip) but should be in the longer term.
3. Monitor your stress and anxiety levels. If the above are not managing them well then you have to determine the health impact of the role.
4. Begin to keep an eye out for other employment options if the above point ends up being the the case. Your health is more important than a specific job.
No tips, sorry, just here to say I feel your pain, was in your shoes, 4-5 meetings a day and I'm strongly introverted and English is my second language 🤣 I quit after 7 months eventhough the company and my boss were super great but I just couldn't deal with all that stress, I have never been that stressed out in my entire life (15 years years working in accounting), went back to my old company/role, luckily they liked me so gladly took me back. Blessings to you, hopefully it'll get easier for you!
Thank you! Glad you could get back into a role that suits you better. I think I might be headed down the same path
That seems crazy - what are all these meetings about? Do they really affect your work directly
My job is more on the operational side now so most of the meetings are check ins with the various accounting teams I support, check ins with my own team, syncing on different initiatives we have going on. My manager wants me to stay aware of what all these teams are working on so I can remove blockers and help improve processes. Definitely a lot more interaction than I realized going into it.
I am also an introverted accountant with a meeting heavy role. I do much better with one on one meetings, compared to meetings with a lot of other people in them. I have been in the role for 1.5 years. Meetings are still an issue for me. I recommend asking what information that you can share with team on a regular basis. That might reduce the number of meetings. Good luck!
Get professional help sounds like your real problem is social anxiety. Did you know that Warren Buffett is an introvert and had a fear of speaking in public. he took a Dale Carnegie course to get over it.
Despite being an introvert, Buffett has excelled by playing to his strengths—he’s known for his deep thinking, patience, and ability to focus intensely on research and long-term strategy, which are classic introvert traits. He also spends much of his day reading and thinking quietly, which he says is key to his success.
