I think many marketing jobs throw you into the deep end and expect you to figure out how to contribute. I feel like this has been every job I've had in the industry, and I don't know why that is. Do they just expect us to know how everything works on day one?
Probably not but I don’t want to be clueless day 100 ya know?
Talk to your manager and let them know that you need things to do. It's possible that people are just swamped and not paying attention, but whoever hired you knows you are there. Don't sit around doing nothing, try to get into the action.
Got it! Thanks
I would say exactly what you said here, to your boss. Tell them you understand everyone is busy but you want to make an impact and need training. I think it will also show initiative going to your boss like that.
Eek kinda scary but will do!
Ugh I hate when this happens. In the past, I try to do my best to figure out what’s going on and see where I can make an impact and just dive right in. Believe me if you do something wrong someone’s gonna tell you good luck.
Haha thank you! 🙏
Ugh, I feel this. My first week at my last job felt like being dropped into a group project with no brief. What helped was writing down everything I didn’t understand, then picking one or two people to ask targeted questions. Sometimes folks are too busy for a sit-down, but they'll respond to “Hey, can I shadow you for 10 minutes on X?” Show you are curious and keep trying, it will work.
Okay going to try this! Thanks!
Go and ask someone for help , don't assume!
I would bite off small assignments from my supervisor for quick turnaround and feedback loops. This also establishes rapport, trust and credibility. As you build your reputation you start proposing opportunities to develop your own path and take the role in the direction you want to go. The best role to have is the one you make up for yourself.
