No, the large firms have pay ranges that are mostly impacted by performance. Leaving for another firm (or threatening to leave) is your best leverage, and even those gains are generally transitory.
I mean if you’re jumping from one company to another negotiations and selling yourself is as if not more important than anything. Make yourself desirable and you can get more than whatever the firm is willing to initially pay that’s for sure.
Honestly, they're both important and also understanding the culture of your own employer. I've worked hard and proven myself and received small increases. Any major increase in my income came with sitting down after a period of proven success which led to increased profits and asking for more while recognizing it comes with more expectation. The key to that process, though, was that was how the owner operated. You had to take the initiative or else you'd only ever get modest increases for cost of living. It needs to be deliberate and well founded too - not just a feeling.
