I want to be more culturally responsive in my teaching, but sometimes I'm afraid of getting it wrong. Any resources you recommend for learning and growing without putting the burden on students of color?

I think you just need to be receptive to things like “not seeing color” and “all education is equal” because it’s not. Low income and marginalized students are underprivileged. That’s more important than being culturally responsive and aware. Learning to be equitable instead of equal is important because a child may not have the same resources as the child next to them.

Treating all people with genuine respect, concern, and interest is universally appreciated and expected, I think. Regardless of individual culture, norms of civility are important, and I don’t think most schools are doing a good enough job providing that culture.

What about community outreach centers? Do you know of any you could visit or call? We have some really good outreach services because we’re a refugee resettlement area. Cultural outreach centers would be more than happy to provide information on cultural holidays, food, dress, coming-of-age ceremonies, etc.

OOOH this is such a great suggestion. I hadn't ever really thought about looking into those as a resource but I am defintiely going to . Thank you for sharing this.

What about the cultures that don’t include ‘students of color’. Are you including those cultures as well???

Indigenous students would be "students of color"

Go in with genuine curiosity, respect, and understanding. When you get it wrong, apologize and learn and do better. Don't let fear hold you back.

Go on YouTube/streaming/cable and find documentaries and/or roundtable discussions that focus on the groups you want to learn more about. MSNBC, Frontline(PBS), CNN, etc. It may help if you narrow it down to the group, and specifically what you want to know. Different cultural, ethnic, racial minorities have different experiences. And, it sometimes depends on the country you are teaching/living in and where they are coming from if where they are going to school/living isn't their home country.

I work with a junior PM who is not performing. Not my report, we share a mgr, but as a senior PM I lead the product. He can’t finish anything, needs a lot of coaching, I give him 2h/wk but I can’t afford more.
After 2mos I raised it to our mgr who promised to work with him. 2 more mos passed, mgr talked to him only once, no change in perf. I think mgr doesn’t want to deal with the problem. Now they ask if I want to manage JPM. It is going to be a ‘no’ but I want to ask some advice on all this.
