I want to step up into a higher HR role eventually. Would getting a certification like SHRM-CP make a real difference, or do managers care more about your years of experience? I'm just trying to figure out if I should spend the money to get certified now or wait a bit.

It honestly is super dependent on the company and hiring manager on whether they want/care about/value certifications - especially in HR. IMO, for costly certs, it's best to try to convince your company to help fund them while you're employed.

Note: I personally think PHR > SHRM currently. But I'm sure not everyone is aligned on that.

I don’t want to discourage you but honestly no certifications make a difference in this job market. I got both the SHRM-CP and the PHR a year apart and it’s barely moved the needle forward in NYC. My employer hasn’t recognized it in my salary. You’re only going to invest time, effort, energy, and money into something that won’t give you any return.

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

6 months pregnant and just laid off. And 40% of my severance was just taken in taxes .. I just spoke with paid family leave and I no longer qualify even though I had been paying into the program (thanks NY).. I already applied for unemployment but doctors are telling me I’ve got 10-14 weeks left in this pregnancy.. so stressed having twins and being unemployed, no maternity leave, no paychecks coming in, and I’ve been applying but not a single interview.. just ugh. 😭

I have a job interview today that I’m actually nervous about. That’s a good sign right? All my other ones I was dreading or just wanted to skip. I’ve only been jobless for 2 weeks - I would like more time, but this is a company and boss that we’ve been dancing around each other for about a year. And they have a position open at the same time I need a job.

I am mainly working with shops in the States as a non-native speaker and I am constantly worried about my ability to communicate (in any professional occasion but mostly in meetings). I am working with some of the best shops and this makes the situation worse considering that I am largely surrounded by an extremely competent group of folks that are super good at any form of communication. How do you feel as a native speaker when you meet non-natives? Should they be worried, or, they doing ok?

Is there any advantage to telling a company you are interested in working for in the future where you decided to accept an offer from? Or does it not matter? I accepted an offer a week ago with a great company (Company A) that for this season in my life seems like a great fit and only strengthens what I have to offer company B down the road. Company B just sent me a request for interview and I want to keep the door open with Company B but they were just very late in extending an interview.

Is there a definitive guide to cost of living? The obvious cost of living centers (SF, NYC, LA etc.) get covered a lot, but I’m wondering where my city falls. It’s a modest Midwest city with ~100k residents but is a relatively touristy spot. It often feels like a MCOL area but I’m not sure how to adequately judge that, and it would be helpful to know when comparing salaries and the like.

We have a very broken product process. Our commercial team creates the “strategy” and prioritizes customer problems. But they always want to define the how, when, and product is the executor. What is your current process of commercial providing a customer problem and what are the steps to turn it into a feature?
