I want to work on more commercial litigation cases but my firm does less of it than it used to so partners aren’t really bringing in those types of cases. I’m considering lateraling. However, I am also exploring developing my own practice in this area. To that end, what are some good ways to get started in commercial litigation cases? Are there small, easier matters that are good to start with? I’m thinking simple breach of contract disputes?

I think you’re thinking backwards. I don’t think you’ll be able to decide specifically the level of complexity or the type of commercial cases you will receive because it will be entirely based on the leads you get.

It is in appropriate to ask what the compensation for a position is after a first interview if they want you to go on three more and the interviewers on my first told me that was above their pay grade to tell me?????

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......
