I was a software developer who just moved into tech consulting. What value do non-technical people add in tech consulting? They just talk and have no idea how to implement.

Looking at all tgese tech people who are so siloed in their thinking and then leadership couldn't give 2 fucks of their genius idea and then they need us to tell them what to do because we simply have a better understanding of what should be done. We leave the grunt work to folks who "are technical and develop apps"

like

Yea that's what they bring us in for, there are people who are fantastic at figuring how to do something and they usually are not good at what to do. Look at Jobs, he said what to do, the "technical developers" figured out how to do. There are exceptions but that's what consultants help with. There are superstar super smart implementation consultants too. So get off your arrogant high horse that you're somehow special because you can write code. Anyone can learn the how, what is the X factor.

Don't vent out here. I you have a problem, leave consulting

Well actually one of the most successful managers I've seen was a History major in college. Seriously, bye OP.

like

I agree with you OP. I was a developer before and know what you mean. One of my client's C suite guys had a solid tech background and he saw through all the bullshit. My manager had no idea what he was talking about

I'm the guy that OP hates and reports to 😈

That bullshit is why we get paid so much money too. You'd be surprised at how valuable arts bg people have been in tech consulting. Your mentality is too focused on execution so much so that you're dismissing the whole concept of ideas. You're not a consultant, an SME perhaps, but this job isn't for you.

like

Well u can look at it from the opposite side as well- all the genius consultants dream up big ass ideas and have no inkling of an idea on how to implement. Sorry their skills are restricted to PowerPoint and excel

like

Tech consulting should be done by someone who understands it period. You wouldn't put an arts major to do financial consulting.

like

^^ya thats usually the bullshit I've heard consultants say

like

They're both important to a team. While the technical side often claims that they did all the lifting, they wouldn't know what they were supposed to be lifting or where to lift it to if it wasn't for the functional side. Even the top tech companies had functional people driving teams at one point. OP if you feel like you're more valuable without a functional team, and feel like they have no value, why not go and start your own firm? Being leaner and being the sole source of value gives you a competitive advantage against any of us stuck in our seemingly fault ways
