How do you balance pre- vs post-tax 401k contribution?

You seem to be thinking a post tax IRA is a Roth IRA. All three should be available at pwc (are at other B4).

Post tax is only for those that have already maxed out their 401k limit of 19500 (between Roth and traditional). It is not deductible going in like traditional and you do pay taxes at the end unlike Roth but the tax on the income/gains are deferred.

like

At PwC you can contribute 19.5 K pretax. Can continue contributing up to 55K total contribution on post tax basis. Post tax contributions do not grow tax free as in Roth. The beauty of this is that it is essentially a mega back door into a Roth IRA since PwC allows in service distributions.

So I’m confused now. I thought post-tax 401k contributions were treated like a Roth IRA. You already paid taxes on the contributions so the gains come out tax free.

What’s the advantage of post-tax 401k contributions if I pay taxes on the money going in (and lose the contribution dedication of pre-tax) and still pay taxes on the money when I pull it out?

2/3 Roth 401k (After tax $)
1/3 Traditional 401k (Pre-tax $)

Why the arbitrary mix? It should depend entirely on (1) your current marginal tax rate and (2) your expectation for your effective tax rate at retirement

I do 100% Roth since ER contribution is traditional. I want more tax free money available in retirement so my ss doesn’t get taxed and I can pay minimum Medicare rate. I am in top fed tax bracket now but no tax state. If I lived in high tax state now I’d consider pre-tax. But honestly I’d rather pay a little extra tax now and then when I have $3M in retirement (on top of ER funds) it is a full $3M and not $2M after tax.

Trigger: rare illness post birth

Just sharing that I was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia 3 days after giving birth despite not having risk factors or preeclampsia in my pregnancy. Sharing as I had absolutely no idea about this illness.

Main things to do are check your BP everyday at least the first ten days after you give birth, and go to hospital if it's very high (over 160/110). If you get severe headache or stomach ache then also be vigilant.

Happy to answer any questions!

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

If I’m contributing to my Roth 401k vs pretax 401k and my employer matches 10% of my contributions. My employer match be 10% on my post tax contributions right? Technically meaning I’ll be getting less of my 10% employer match then if I were to do pretax 401k since that match would be on a higher amount?
