Hi all - What is the consulting equivalent of the "Head of.." title at Google? Is it a Director level position? I noticed a few folks on LinkedIn with this title who have close to 20 years of experience but the job postings on Google ask for 5-7 years of relevant experience. Thanks!

To explain you’re confusion around the YoE, 5-7 years is the absolute minimum with the perfect experience and background. That being said, they likely won’t ever hire someone for this role with less than 10-15 years. It’s also common for People Ops to lowball the requirements for a role as it encourages more female candidates to apply. Studies show that women who are equally as qualified as men are less likely to apply for a role if they don’t 100% meet the requirements. It’s definitely also partially an attempt to attract more candidates to the JD

This makes sense, thanks for taking the time to explain.

It doesn't mean anything at all, and I say this from personal experience. Google lets people have pretty much whatever title they want, with the exception of Director, VP, etc. So a lot of people, esp. on the sales and consulting side, choose a "Head of" title to make them sound more important. I've know many "Head of" folks with little experience and no management reports.

like

Interesting, thanks for the insight

Kind of a flex/oddball title but it’s usually for someone that’s demonstrated mastery, so yeah it could be a director level type person. Usually heads up a team for a specific subset, for example if it’s a financial services S&O team it would be the person that the managers/principals report up to.

It’s got a lot of meanings to it but 5-7 years won’t get you that title.

like

Yeah idk what the logic is behind it but someone with 7 YoE isn’t going to land that role. You’re leading the engagement manager subset (they write all of the professional services SOWs). That role is probably closer to 12-15 for a legitimate conversation.

There’s not really a consulting equivalent. It’s an L7 role usually, but there are some exceptions. My “Head of…” leads a segment of a team within a product area (e.g. Sundar -> CMO -> VP of APAC Marketing -> Head of …)

like

A lot of the time - it's a made up title that demotes this person is the lead consultant in this area.

From what I have seen - those people usually have 20+ yoe

helpful

19 YOE in consulting and came over as an L7/Head of title. Definitely a drop in level from consulting but significant increase in TC so didn’t faze me.

helpful

L7 is about where I see people with 20 years of consulting experience come over.

One thing that is rarely talked about is which role families former consultants can join. Joining a solutions consulting or cloud consulting is possible. Joining as a technical solutions consultant is much harder as the bar for tech is so high
