I was just looking at the latest unemployment numbers, and they've gone up a bit where I live. Then I went on LinkedIn and I saw an accounting job posted yesterday with over 800 applicants already, which got me thinking. With the economy being a bit shaky, seeing so many people applying makes me wonder if companies are trying to make their jobs look super competitive to drive down salaries. Thoughts?

I’ve wondered the same thing.. It’s hard to tell what’s real, so many postings get flooded with applicants, but are companies actually hiring or just fishing for the lowest bidder? With layoffs and uncertainty, it feels like employers have all the leverage right now. Definitely makes job hunting more frustrating!

I think you’re comparing a huge macro number to one job posting on LI. I wouldn’t read too much into that.

I've heard recruiters say not to read too much into those numbers on LinkedIn. Sometimes the number shows how many people clicked in to read the whole listing, it doesn't indicate how many people kept going and submitted a completed application. In any event, it has been an employer's market for some time now, I don't think companies have to play any tricks to make looking for jobs super competitive. That's just the reality anyway.

Sometimes companies do try to capitalize on a larger applicant pool, especially when the economy's uncertain. It can be a strategy to hold down salaries, but it also shows how tough the job market can get. It's always a good idea to look at the bigger picture. Compensation isn't just about salary. Companies often add perks, bonuses, and other incentives, which can sometimes make up for lower base pay. But yeah, it does make the job search a bit trickier.

That linked applicants number is not a true applicants number, I wouldnt pay attention to that.
Many people just click that thing but never fill out the while application.
