My brother currently attends Cal and being from the Bay Area and having attended many recruiting events there for my firm, your friend’s opinion is not representative of the student body at all.
There is a vocal minority of students that might not be interested but for the majority Facebook and Amazon are among the top in demand companies at least for CS majors and that hasn’t really changed much.
I think you just happened to speak to someone super liberal who values those qualities but it’s not close to the norm.

True, Big tech is the new finance / mgmt consulting
As a psych major, I planned to enter counseling/social work and save the world. When I got into it, I realized most social service programs are broken and have many barriers to entry based on good intentions. A lot of the veteran employees were cynical to the point where they didn't care about trying to help because it was pointless. When I sold out for financial services, I sold out with pride knowing I could help wealthy people become slightly wealthier. Those modest tax-deductible contributions I advised were 100x of what the government programs did. I saved the world.
This makes me so very sad.
Facebook is somewhat evil, but sign me up
aside from ethics, I knew a lot of techies who didn’t view FAANG as particularly desirable bc of better compensated, more prestigious unicorn startups, eg Dropbox, Airbnb, Lyft, and even other smaller startups
Obviously COVID has likely changed this, but at least this is what was my impression for the last few years
As a cal grad, this is true. Getting to FAANG isn’t as difficult especially as an engineer - large tech companies such as Slack, Dropbox, Uber and Lyft all offer similar comp and WLB that are somewhat smaller, and let you have a bigger impact. Another draw I’ve noticed are people who interned at FAANG but left to startups for the equity and opportunity to build a company from the ground up. There are lots of similar tech options in California
Facebook reached out a couple times and I declined. I do executive compensation and when helping set the high pay for executives, I feel like I need to believe they are worth the money if I were to go corporate. Google and Apple reached out and after discussions, we determined their roles were too junior.
I left Facebook. If it wasn’t for How crappy San Jose and Cali in general cost I’d still be there.

Where are you now?
Wouldn’t work for Facebook for ethical reasons or amazon for corporate culture reasons.
Money and WLB are the biggest advantages
Seattle is expensive but I’m working 50-55 hours most weeks and making $400k+ as an L7.
I’d be a second year partner and it looks like my former colleagues will make about 20-30% less than me this year given market conditions.
PPED between delivery, sales work, travel and internal initiatives, many of them BS, is exhausting. Partner just restarts the climb.
The partnership model as it is now is unlikely to endure as the pension creates a great deal of overhead and new competitors and entrants won’t be encumbered by this. No industry is likely to avoid significant disruption . We have already seen this in the legal profession and accounting and consulting will see this as well.

What is the alternative? Or what companies are they saying are ethical?
If someone exposes me to really bad ethics, yes I think I would have a problem working for that company, given other options. But I guess I don't see any of the mentioned companies as pure evil. I care more about company culture I guess. Because all of corporate America seems to have skeletons in the closet or questionable actions in the light of day...

Top prospects seem to be FB and Google for most target schools. Those in more specialized domains may aim for more specific teams - Uber ATG, Alphabet Moonshot, FB NPE... etc.

All very interesting perspectives guys. Thanks for sharing so far! Was curious to hear what people think in our industry / people who have left our industry and this has been interesting to follow!
What is your opinion of Deloitte?
I have yet to understand (beyond bragging to family and friends) why anyone would kill themselves for FAANG. Putting aside some of the moral issues (burn in hell Zuckerberg) they money isn’t that great, since you have to live in the Bay Area which is nuts expensive. And you are competing with thousands of other super smart, very driven people. It probably unbelievably hard to move up the ranks at any of those companies.
I knew a former coworker who went to FB about 7 yrs ago and she was one of the smartest people I have ever met. And she never was promoted no matter how well she did. She left after 3-4 yrs for a smaller company and she is much happier.
