I'm not going to be helpful but I'm in a similar boat. Laid off back in February. Have only applied to 50 jobs though. Have tapped every referral and tried to make connections for every application. Have had 2 interviews, in which I was rejected at round 4 of interviews. I'm currently trying to find a head hunter to hire and make something happen.
It's been almost two years for me. I've revamped my resume, LinkedIn, reviewed interview strategies and applied to I don't know how many jobs. I've twenty years of experience and this has never happened before. Losing hope.
You will find something, eventually. Although it will still be super precarious.
15+ YOE here. Top-tier schools, large multinational employers, global clients only. Native level multilingual. Never been let go or laid off in my whole life to date.
Still it took me almost two years, over 5000 applications, 65 hiring processes, 2 retracted job offers (including a FAANG after the 7th and last round — "hiring freeze"), plus a relocation to get a job.
You need to be thinking about career alternatives. PR jobs are following the trends in journalism jobs from 10 years ago - massive cuts hitting hardest on older/more experienced workers. There simply aren’t enough chairs left for everyone and it’s only going to get worse. It will be random and cruel, but you should give yourself permission to think big about what you really want to do.
Stop applying online. Get out there, network, and impress people.
I do agree with the networking angle. Doing meet and greet and finding a way to get around the ATS seems to be the key from people I've talked to that have changed jobs in the last year or so.
Not a helpful reply but sending some solidarity your way. It's a tough market so don't beat yourself up too much.
Has anyone here tried consulting or freelancing? I’m wondering if that’s a better option, but I’m a little afraid to make the jump.
Do you think you have an opportunity to niche down to differentiate yourself? The job market is… really bad right now. Finding a way to stand out might help.
