I was told my resume looked dated because I used a template from 2022 instead of the new AI-optimized layouts. Apparently, the bots now prefer a very specific density of whitespace and a skills cloud at the top or they just ignore you? I’m spending more time formatting my Word doc than I am actually building applications. Is there a perfect resume format for 2026?

100% correct - you need to either get with the program (use AI to make your resume to pass the AI screeners) or you'll be left behind

Who told u that? My friend is trying to get a job for last 2 year and hasn’t gotten a single interview and his resume is AI formatted. You do have to update your resume based on job requirement but there is no magical formst that will get you through the door. I have not used AI at all had multiple interviews and finally landed a role but i can say the market is brutal and never seen this bad in my last 15 years. Never had to wait too long to get an offer.

2 years with zero interviews usually means the resume is getting filtered before a human even sees it, not that the person is unemployable. I’d stop staring at the formatting first and run it against a few real job descriptions, then look for missing keywords, weird section titles, and anything ATS might skip like tables or text boxes.

I had a resume that looked clean to me but was getting nothing back, and once I stripped it down to plain sections and matched the wording to the posting, callbacks changed pretty fast. The market can still be brutal tho, so it’s probably a mix of timing + resume fit, not just one thing.

If he’s applying to the same kind of role over and over, I’d check whether his summary and bullet points actually mirror the job reqs, especially the exact tools and titles in the posting. I ended up using ResumeJudge for a quick scan before tweaking mine, but honestly the big win was just making the resume line up with the JD instead of trying to make it look fancy.

Agreed. Cannot send generic resumes have to match the JD and close as possible to the domain.

Wow, I thought at first that it was hokum, but I searched online and apparently there is something to that. With AI and ATS, less is more in 2026. No more professional summary. Instead, keywords mapped to the job description. Instead of experience on top, it’s bumped down after core competencies.

That said. In the job hunt it is too easy to blame yourself for not landing already. The market it terrible. If your resume tells your story well and it is optimized for ATS, you’re probably in good shape. Use one of the private free ATS Resume Checkers on line to be sure.

Q’s for hiring partners and recruiters - you know that most associates quit their managing attorneys and not the firm/case. I’m in that boat. What do I say to a prospective employer about the situation of why I want to jump ship?

Very brief background - I’m a senior associate who has been on one complex commercial litigation case for over a year. Over time, the relationships between attorneys on the case have deteriorated to the point that it is affecting my productivity/work. I want out.

How often do you respond to emails from law students who want to learn about your firm/practice area? I get like a dozen requests right around OCI every year. Frankly I’m tired of speaking to them and answering the same boring questions, especially if I know they have a low GPA and no chance of summering at my firm, but I do feel bad saying no/ignoring them

I see so many posts about going in-house and wonder if it’s a possibility for me at some point or if my chosen career path has pretty much closed the door on that, since I mostly see people discussing this in the big law bowl. I do (mostly plaintiff-side) employment lit at a small firm. Are there any in-house roles where the skills I’ve acquired would be useful? Or does anyone have tips about how to build useful skills for in-house in my current role?

Lit boutique v. full-service statewide regional firm as mid-level commercial lit lateral out of biglaw. Things to consider? Pay and non-equity partnership prospects are similar with similar timeline. Regional firm has a much stronger presence in my city, while boutique would involve a more national practice and possibly more sophisticated work. Fwiw I know some people at the regional firm and the people seem awesome. The boutique is full of well-accomplished and super smart lawyers. Need advice!

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

However, I am worried if I accept the tech role and I do not become permanent I will be looking again for a job in 12-24 months and my CV won't be showing a managerial position. Won't be showing any progress.
