Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?

Lots of in-house L&E roles, but you’ll most likely need defense side and counseling experience. If you look to get a role doing L&E at a defense firm, that could ease the transition. I also think it would make you stand out since you have plaintiff’s side experience.

I think it really depends on the company and the market. I get the sense smaller companies in secondary market won’t care - they’ll care more about your experience. Maybe look at a midsized firm?
We have a very lean legal department and one of our attorneys is dedicated to L&E work.
My experience is that it depends from company to company. Some companies have general counsel that like to fish from same big law pool that they came from and some are open to candidates with experience at any sized law firm. I’d just pick a specialty you like, get 3-8 years of experience and then see what is out in the market for in-house.
