I watched a new hire walk into our bank and secure a base salary that it took me four years of promotions to reach. We’re both Senior Portfolio Managers handling the exact same asset size. I love my clients and my commute is seamless, but the sheer disrespect of the pay disparity is making me physically ill. Do I try to leverage his salary for an immediate counter-match, or do I just take my book of business and leave?

It’s true that the best way to increase salary is by changing job not by waiting for promotion. There’s every possibility of a new hire negotiating a higher pay than the people already doing similar job. It’s known as salary inversion.

I think if you’re very sure that the new hire is getting more than you, you can request a pay review because you have mentioned that you like your clients and commute is seamless. So while leaving may be an advantage in terms of pay, you may likely pay more to commute when you work somewhere else.

Personally, I have always explored external markets to know what companies are willing to pay for my skills. Take interviews even if you’re not desperate. That will give you an idea of how much your skills worth out there. With this information, you can decide to ask for a pay review at your current job and if not accept, you can leave.

If the new person has the same level of experience and is doing the same job, why does it matter when they started at your company? It does not sound like a pay disparity if they are making the same as you. Just because they put their time in somewhere else, does not mean they did not put their time in.

So the value to the organization in terms of asset size is the same between the two of you and you’re upset that you’re compensated the same?

Yeah, that’s how it works.

Your options are to deal with it and get your portfolio or leave.

Do not try to do a direct comparison unless you want that cloud over you. How much they chose to pay that person is irrelevant unless there’s a measurable where you outperform.

Another way of looking at it is you may have better job security because of the lower cost and higher tenure.

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

Does anybody know what the typical salary range is and total comp for someone starting out as an internal or external wholesaler? If you are one of these, can you share about your experience in terms of whether you liked it or not, work life balance, travel, etc?

User experience mgr salary? I support six product teams and eight reports. 20+ years experience

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.
